Radio only working sporadically

Have an Astra mk2 with the original Philips radio. I actually quite like that, except recently it's been quite unreliable. When I go to turn it on, there will be a "-C-" sign greyed out on the LED's. It's like the LED's are working, but not lighting up so just showing grey instead of orange. It'll then automatically go to "1611mw", but again greyed out and with no sound. When it does work, after a seemingly random amount of time it cuts out, and greys out again, but it will stay on the station I was listening to. I can change stations, search etc, but all with the LED greyed out and no sound at all


Does anybody have any idea as to what this might be? Eternally grateful for any answers as it's doing my head in, I can hear all the rattles and it's worrying me

Sounds like a power issue. Is the battery OK? Is the alternator over charging?

Does it switch on/work fine with the ignition off? (it should, if it doesn't it's not wired correctly)

After you've checked the first two things you probably need to and pull it out of the dash and see if you can find a loose connection. Get the code first. IIRC you have to remove 4 small allen screws to get it out. The connection will stay in the cage, so you might have to pull that out (bend all the little metal tabs flat, and you might have to bend it about a bit...) to see the connector.
