I am in the process of buying a weekend toy and whilst checking on insurance I am struggling to find an insurance company who will give some discount in recognition of my No Claims Bonus on my main car. I had hoped i could work the system with a multi car policy but am struggling. Has any one any recomendations or recent experience of this.

who ever you have your first policy with the may match the new 2nd policy, that should get you by the first year. Then you can look around the insurance companies in year 2.

This worked for me a few years ago when i had x4 policys, maybe things have since changed

Had the same thing last summer - garaged MX5, less than 4k pa, seasonal use.

Admiral 'multicar' offered no saving for me.

The 'specialist' brokers were not competitive.

Went on the comparison websites and went with the best deal for zero NCD (despite 10+ years NCD on my main car)

Ended up with Chaucer Direct.

I had the same problem just over a year ago, some companies will mirror your NCD or will offer 'introductory discounts' so the premium shouldn't be too bad. I insure a Clio 172 Cup with some modifications (used for hillclimbing) for £365pa as a 2nd car.

This. Trying to insure a second car, less powerful and expensive car for under 3000 miles a year just this week. All the quotes I got 'taking account your NCB' were doing no such thing, and were often more expensive than those comparison website quotes where I'd put 0 years NCB.

Yet another proof that the whole system is a compulsory con set up to extract as much money as possible.
You've got a driver insurance system so why do you have to accrue NCD on each car separately? I'm yet to meet someone who can drive two or more cars at the same time.

Thanks for the quick replies gents, I have just tested the Admiral multi-car web site and it only increases the premium on my main car by about £130 if I move my NCD on to my proposed weekender. So things might not be as bad as I feared. I have been waiting for Aviva my current insurer to get back to me all day since they were giving me the run around first thing this morning.

I use A-Plan for the same thing - they 'clone' (legitamitely) my no claims for use on a second car with the insurer - this works well for me as it allows me to insure both cars (MX-5/330i) quite reasonably. (Well, as reasonably as insurance can be)

Forget online quotes if you're looking for a company to "mirror" NCB. You need to call and ask one of those funny Human things wink

this is the way classic insurance works,

you have a main car insured, you insure your other car fairly cheaply, this "classic" insurance also does not accrue NCB, i had 3 classics insured as well as my main car, none accrued NCB and all were subject you having a main car and insurance.

suppose it depends what your weekend toy will be

Ring Admiral rather than using their website, if you ask nicely they should mirror your NCB and that will reduce the premium down even further. I just got my 530i Insured for £550 per year fully comp by sticking it on my parent's multicar, that is much, much cheaper than the next best quote I got elsewhere.

yep - I phoned Admiral about 4 times until they matched the discount on my main car - they will do it if you keep trying

Elephant will mirror you NCB if you have both policies with them. Or they would five years ago, anyway.

Thanks to everyone for the input, just to let you know after a lot of back and forth there has been a happy ending to the story. I will not bore you with all the details but suffice to say Aviva my original insurer, who are just starting with a multi-car product, have come good and beaten the Admiral quote by allowing me a discount equivalent to my NCD off my second car. I now have their first 4 car policy for about £1400 they also offer full NCD on the second policy after 2years so anyone else is looking it is with giving them a try but you need to talk to the Multi car team, only there 9to5 English office (well Norwich anyway)so no overseas call centre problems.
Thanks again John

When I bought my 1st TVR I insured it with Cheam who mirrored my NCB from my other car, or more correctly offered "an introductory discount equivalent to a full NCB" and then a year later were happy to give me proof of a full NCB.

As others have already said, the alternative is a classic policy that neither requires nor accrues a NCB.

Edit: However, I did buy my 1st TVR 10 years ago so things may have changed.
