"?Oli.
Radio 2 took a huge backward step when Jimmy Young ceased doing the programme that is now handled by Jeremy Vine. As far as I'm concerned JY had a much more balanced view of things, whereas JV is, by comparison, a lightweight twit.
So far as cyclists are concerned relative to other road users, whether it is in London or anywhere else, nobody is trying to kill anybody, and to talk in those terms is sheer silliness. OK, most people make mistakes from time to time, but if those sounding off in exaggerated terms were to keep their own houses in order, most of the difficulties wouldn't amount to much.
Does it occur to peabrain Vine that he might have been, at least in part, a contributor to the problems about which he is complaining?

Every article about cycling seems to be trying to start some kind of "Us vs. Them" war between cyclists and motorists. As a member of both Us and Them who commutes at least 20 miles per day through Central London by bike, and who also regularly drives in Central London, my view is that the vast majority of London road users are doing a perfectly decent job of getting to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible. I don't recognise the terrifying, life-in-hands battlefield described by people like Vine and Jon Snow, at all.
As a cycle commuter and recreational driver, I have to say that I disagree with everyone of his coping strategies.
Annoying stupid polite vest, super bright head torch, video camera. What's the f
king point. Every single one of them points to some passive aggressive personality defect that serves only to wind people up. Try riding courteously with a bit of patience, forethought and understanding for other road users.
It appears Jeremy vine's a sanctimonious twunt on the bike as well as the radio.

This can't be said too much. Nobody sane wants to have a road accident, and no group of road users are all insane. I don't understand how people run into these issues. I ride a bike regularly, am polite to all road users whether I'm walking, driving or riding, and I never seem to feel like I'm about to die, I will admit I don't ride in London - I've ridden into city centres though.
And I'd certainly never wear a "POLITE" hi-vis jacket. Grade one cock. He also should appreciate that the pedestrian (whether he likes it or not) has right of way. Muppet.

I stopped to let a cyclist out today and. blocked the road for a good minute or two, waiting for him to pull out.
He was trying to turn right out into a very busy road, on a blind corner, which is why I decided to help him out and blocked traffic coming around the corner.
When he finally got a gap in the opposing traffic, he didn't even acknowledge me or say thanks.

I am not a cycle commuter, but do cycle on the roads and many years ago used to commute by bike around Croydon, but do agree with you about the things he does which are likely to wind up car drivers. On seeing the photo my thought was, why is he wearing a vest which gets as close to impersonating a Police officer as it is possible to do without breaking the law as that is my view of those jackets - they are intended to imply that we need to take extra care because it is worn by someone who is Police, the fact it says Polite is part of that. When I read that he has a torch on his helmet that could temporarily dazzle a driver he came across as thoughtless and stupid - dazzling someone you don't want to drive in to you is pretty stupid, if they can't see surely you are increasing the chance they will hit you - he probably dirves with rear fog lights on when it is drizzling too. The video camera just indicates someone who is paranoid and looking to apportion blame to another party. All adds up to a cyclist I would not want to be near on a road, although I would still take great care if I were near them to ensure they didn't dent my car.Annoying stupid polite vest, super bright head torch, video camera. And what car does he drive that costs £900 to service - actually, having listened to him it is probably just ineptitude regarding cars that meant he didn't know he was being ripped off.
He is a t
t, however there are even bigger t
ts in cars who do not like cyclists. In cities there is a them and us, us car drivers who in genral obey the law and those cyclists who genrally ignore it. I just sit in dibelief that there are not more cyclists killed when you see the antics of the courier cyclists and the new breed of "fixies" who don't want to stop.
My pet in on the open road around the Cotswolds, this now seems to be a popular haunt for the Lycra bunch. Here they are now pack riding two or three abreast, which does cause traffic to bunch up badly. Not good as impatience leads to stupid overtakes. They should be in single file then overtaking is not an issue.
And before the usual complaints I am a cyclist myself
