Collector-grade Vauxhall Nova Sport for sale

There's life in the old girl yet. Five figures worth, apparently...

Okay, we’ll take a break from four-decade-old hot hatches after this one - promise. But if the sight of a surviving Renault 19 16v from 1995 had you strolling back down memory lane yesterday, the thought of a Vauxhall Nova from ten years earlier is likely to trigger similar emotions. The asking price of this one is likely to do some triggering of its own, of course - but that’s the price of memorabilia these days.

The Sport, at least, has the right to call itself a proper homologation special. We covered one a year ago (almost to the day), and in 12 months this is only the second to appear for sale. That makes sense - there were only ever 500 examples, primarily built so that Vauxhall could go Group A rallying - and like most affordable hot hatches of its era, the Nova has a woeful survival rate.

This is because a) they rusted like tin cans and b) they were unlikely to survive contact with a telegraph pole. Or be cost-effective to fix if they did. Additionally, some were taken racing - McRae’s early relationship with the Nova was a tale oft-repeated by teenagers witlessly driving the doors off them a decade later - and many if not most have now gone to the scrap heap in the sky.

In any decade prior to this one, it is a trend that would likely have seen Nova numbers dwindle to the point of effective extinction - but we’d guess the rising popularity (and profitability) of anything that evokes ‘90s hedonism is reflected in the howmanyleft numbers. Only a few years ago, the combined number of GTE and GSI Novas left on the road had tapered to just 40 examples. By Q2 of this year, that number was back up to 90.

That suggests a fair few of the several hundred still in the SORN bank have had new life breathed back into them. And you can see why such a thing might be happening when the asking price for a Nova Sport, if we’re to credit this one with a halfway reasonable valuation, is now beyond £30k. Granted, Vauxhall’s limited Polar White model with its stickers and breathed-on 1.3-litre motor is a special case - but still.

As ever, after a certain point any used car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and certainly the Nova has spent long enough in the doldrums to have earned a little time in the sun. This one has had some (reversible) chassis upgrades that account for its on-point stance and likely mean it handles just like you’d hope a flyweight hatchback from 1985 would. Although maybe you’d have to sparring with additional miles - who knows what it will be worth next year…

Very cool.

However, even though my first car was a Nova SR and I'm therefore biased, plenty of other cars I'd rather spend £30k on.

I would love to have garage space for a 3 door Nova.

Doesn’t have to be a £30k Sport mind you.

They are indeed a very rare sight and I guess someone who is wanting one badly enough will pay top money.

Drove a Nova SR back in the day, nostalgia is a great thing but £30k for one of these is ridiculous, think what you could buy for that sum.

Cheaper than expected, wasn't one reported on here as going through auction at £65k+ a number of years ago?

"Okay, we ll take a break from four-decade-old hot hatches after this one - promise" - I am quite happy if you continue, its infinitely more interesting than a new EV one or 911 restomod

The Nova is lovely

Definitely hits the nostalgia button for me as I really wanted one back in my youth but had to settle for a 3dr 1.4 Luxe in a very light green with that brown dash but a velour interior. Did over 50k in that car until the inevitable rust literally ate the rear away. Would I want another Nova? Definitely. Would I pay £30k for one? Absolutely not. Not even a Sport.

I'm off to the classifieds to see if there are any for sale for sub £3k money.

When R5 GT Turbo's are around £20k... £30k for this is ridiculous.

As a Fast Ford and Lotus fan since the early Seventies I never really got interested in Vauxhalls. However, in the early 2000s a close friend took in a Nova GTE as a bad debt settlement ( not motoring related)) and offered me it at a very fair price. It was a great little thing for a couple of years, I passed it onto a friend when a nice Sierra 4x4 came up at a mate’s Ford Dealership.

I always thought the 3 door Nova looked great with those "bubble" wheelarches, but £30K+ - wow!

£30k, my arse.

For a 69bhp car that never was any good?

That's lovely. Serious money, but a very rare car indeed now. If I won the lottery, a Nova Sport and Euro-spec 205 Rallye would definitely find their way into my collection of homologation specials.

Never any good? I do love how people try to change history when it comes to cars. The Nova got loads of positive reviews in period. They went through a period of being out-dated and crusty, but that doesn't mean they were bad cars.

Agreed - massively and amateurishly retouched. The last time I saw CGI shading like that was on the light cycles from Tron.

93bhp. And an homologation special that ended up doing really well in rallying.

Whilst the price seems a tad high. It’s a rare car in great condition with a great history. So not far off I think.
