Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4Matic+ | Spotted

There won't be an E63 like this one again - time to see what the fuss is all about...

There’s a new Mercedes-Benz E-Class out there now, which means - as sure as night follows day - there will be an AMG range-topper along soon enough. Probably two, in fact, if the last car is anything to by, with an E53 to sit below the ’63. A new fast flagship for the E-Class range is exciting news, too. Even with the demise of the V8 and a less than favourable response to the smaller C63, there have simply been too many very good E AMGs in the past for expectations not to be on the lofty side of high.

The last model was the best of them, too. Oh sure, the early cars rode pretty firmly and the twin-turbo V8 could never quite beguile like the old 6.2 - but for bringing together all the desirable supersaloon elements it was unmatched. The styling was well judged - not too meek and not too menacing - the powertrain was more characterful than the M5’s, the interior was appropriately sumptuous and the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive was a masterstroke.

Not only was this the first E63 to leave Affalterbach with more than 600hp, it could also deploy that incredible potential in a fashion completely alien to any previous model. And at the same time also relive former glories at a stroke (or a convoluted button bash) with a two-wheel drive mode. Nowadays, Drift Modes are pretty much mandatory for an enthusiast-focused four-wheel drive system, but in 2016 the AMG’s was genuinely innovative. Completely daft, sure. But innovative. Like putting an F1 powertrain in a hypercar or creating an 840hp plug-in hybrid V8 with eight miles of range, AMG knows what it’s doing when it comes to this kind of thing.

However, while the 213-era broadened the scope of E63, it never lost sight of the model’s core appeal. This was still a really nicely appointed E-Class with a honking great V8 up front that would pass most by unnoticed, and it could be used as such. Ride notwithstanding (it was improved with the facelift), there was no price to pay for this newfound ground-covering ability. Anyone familiar with E63s would have been staggered at the way this car could get from here to very far over there. By combining the new school AMG approach to tarmac-crushing composure first seen in the 2013 A45 with the traditional charm of a big V8 and rear drive (if you wanted it), the E63 quickly won itself a lot of fans.

In addition, like so many AMG favourites, both the W213 saloon and S213 estate have depreciated pretty hard. The last three years or so have probably prevented losses quite as drastic as before 2020, but just over £50k for this one must be something like half its price when new from 2018. Bar a tiny bit of crinkling on the driver’s seat bolster, its 48,000 miles have seemingly left no mark at all. Indeed, Hyacinth Red is a great choice for these cars, a welcome splash of colour in a sea of dark greys, blues and blacks. The removal of the rear badges, plus a less moody colour than usually seen, would surely go a long way to further convincing regular folk this was just any other E-Class.

This E63 seemed like a special one in period, and its reputation will surely only be embellished by the arrival of a straight-six replacement. That car may well shock us again and serve to make this one look short on tech, performance and driver appeal. But as the last V8 E63 as well as the first 4Matic+ car, it’s always going to have a special place in the heart of AMG fans. Especially, of course, as a wagon.

For me it’s the perfect colour, de-badged too which would deceive most of the hot hatch boys, has the carrying capacity for my family’s detritus on a European jaunt and the ability to be an exciting drive too; what’s not to like?
Sorry, what’s that SWMBO, we’ve got a Villa to buy in South East Spain first? Oh…

Every time I hear a '63 whether it be the 4.0 or the 5.5 I keep promising myself one.

My current daily is an F11 535d and as capable as it is, I'm thinking I need another 200bhp, 2 more cylinders and double the fuel/tax/insurance costs.

Currently watching a similar car. Very last of the generation before, so has the 5.5, but lower miles and for me, the rarer CLS shooting brake, so still an estate of sorts.

The colour isn't to my taste(a bit too old man for me), however I love the engine in these and I bet they're a cracking all round performance car for sure.

Can any ex or current owners tell me how ruinous these are to run please to prevent me popping off to autotrader to find a nice mag grey one? Servicing, repair bills, usual stuff to keep my hard saved pcp deposit right where it is please. Much obliged

I can tell you de-badging these will make no difference. They are loud at idle and under throttle , even with the twin turbos on them! Lovely cars but the ride is truly back breaking for no reason.

Couple more years left with the 5.5 and then I'll be after one of these. Not a red one though, lovely as the colour is it really needs to look as boring as possible for the full effect. More power and 4wd with no weight penalty is pretty impressive engineering.

Plus they look massive on the road in the way the previous generation never did, to my eyes at least. So much presence.

I prefer the 5.5 for the slightly more organic V8 noise, but the sheer speed of this generation is monumental. I’d like mine in brown with no tints please.

Not bad for the power, speed and size.......... ave mid to high 20's MPG, tyres every 15-20k miles, servicing £500-£1000 depending on A or B, generally very reliable, I typically spend an additional £500 a year on bits and pieces.

Sorry, can’t help you there. I’ve had mine for around 18-months and it’s been an amazing ownership experience. Servicing is reasonable, tyres are common sizes nowadays, fuel consumption is good if you are pootling about (obviously it’s a different story when you press the fun pedal a little bit harder) so I’m of no use to you. Hopefully someone else can put you off because I can only recommend them.

Friend has a tweaked one of these. Apparently well north of 750bhp.
Went for a blast down some nice B roads. Monumentally fast on the straights then hard on the brakes for rapidly approaching corners. Bounced up down at the same time.
Got car sick very quickly so had to swap into another friends car to chill out a bit. That’s a Civic type R!
Not been keen since.

Test drove one of these a couple of weeks ago, for me the perfect car on paper

Didn’t find the ride to hard, or tyre noise to intrusive but it was just so ‘boomy’ inside at motorway speeds on anything less than perfect tarmac, to the extent it was tricky to hold a conversation. So walked away a bit dejected….

I've got the older 5.5 E63. Running costs are similar to LeeM135i, £600-1200 a year in servicing (higher bill was new rear discs/pads). I get similar tyre life to my old 335D and 20-25mpg. Insurance is the same as a 335D for me. So for 10k miles a year, it's about £2k more a year in fuel/additional road tax. Not bad in my opinion, you don't just get more power/v8 noises. The handling/ride quality and interior is significantly better than a big diesel alternative.

I have one of these in the exact spec but a 2015 with a few more miles. Great car that only really gets the 'right' kind of attention.

I am seriously considering one but give how I like to drive, I feel it's too fast for me and hence not what I want. Also aren't brakes £2k? Or is that wrong?

You might find that one or more of the wheels is buckled. I had the same problem with my 2014 CLS... the rear wheel was slightly buckled which manifested in a strange resonance/boom inside at cruising speeds.

Now sorted, its an exceptionally serene cruiser and I'm surprised the E would be any different as the platform and tyre sizes are the same.

I went through a similar thought process, except from a CLS 250CDI. I really fancied a CLS AMG shooting brake. In the end, my sensible trousers won the battle and I ended up with a newer mega-spec CLS 350d shooting brake.

I cant speak highly enough though of the X218, its a fabulous package if you do decide to go that way. Vs the E class the rear screen is quite steeply raked, which may not be ideal if, for instance, you have a big hound that sits in the boot.

I keep toying with the idea of C43/E43, etc but my "mechanic mate" just keeps telling me how rotten they are, mechanically and electrical gremlins. What's the view from owners, proper?

I love this car. Fun, power, practicality and speed all wrapped up in a nice, all-round package.

3.4 secs to 60 is madness for a car of this size and weight.
