Oh aye...is that the one where the gears came apart/disintegrated or something?

Take it they're not very efficient?

My old NC30 - V4 Honda

I think some Harley Davidsons use it as well but don't quote me on that

A few of the bigger Diesel Nissan ones in the Terrano's and stuff use gear driven.

Are, they were nylon IIRC - can be replaced with steel now.

Some tractor engines have (or had) gear driven cams.

Most V4 Hondas - starting with the original incarnation of the VFR750, through the non-VTEC VFR800s and the NC30/45 and RC30/45.

When Honda switched the VFR to VTEC, they dropped the gear driven cams in favour of chains.

The ford cologne v6 had a gear driven cam with the nylon teeth that would break. You can get aluminum replacements here. For most American V8s you can buy a gear set for them and ditch the chains. You can get them quiet or noisy. I believe the difference is the teeth are at an angle or straight. The noisy kind of makes it sound like it's supercharged

Straight cut or helical. Straight cut gears whine, helical ones are more silent and less prone to slip/jump

It's why a lot of cars whine in reverse. It's because the gears are straight cut, where as the forward gears are helical.

Or twin helical if you like citroens.

all the ones I have seen (and own) are chain? -all be it two versions of chain

Volkswagen Touareg 2.5TDI and 5.0TDI.

Neither of the above have any auxilary belts either. All ancillaries are also gear driven.

The Volkswagen LT fitted with the 2.8TDI is also gear driven though they have a fan belt.

All Ford Essex (3.0 liter) and the later 2.8 Cologne have a gear driven cam, exept some of the late OHC ones. They are nylon but dont wear out as quickly as some people think, the steel replacement ones are noisier.

I suspect that an awful lot of posters on here are mixing up "gear driven" and "chain driven".....go back and think again.

2.5 and 5.0 Touareg are definately gear driven. No timing belts, no timing chains, no auxilary belts.

The 2.8 Colonge engine did indeed have fibre/nylon gear driving the cam.

The later 2.9 lunp has got a chain driven cam.

There's a lot of bks talked about the timing gear stripping its teeth - never had a problem with my old 2.8 Capri in 4 years, and I'me not aware of anyone else who's had a problem.
