Diesel emissions cold scam call
Discussion
TL:DR I got cold called today and am wondering where they got my details from
I was called on my mobile from a London number (for what thats worth) by an individual who knew my name, that I drove a diesel BMW, knew the exact model and registration number and obviously had my mobile number but almost certainly didnt have any other details like my address
Id consented to the call because Id filled in an online form with my details - which of course I hadnt and they were trying their luck with some kind of emissions compo scam
The company was called Phoenix Global
Id quite like to know where scammers can easily get my details as above, to the best of my knowledge the only people who know I drive a diesel Beemer are my mates and family, the DVLA and BMW UK as it was a direct purchase
Any ideas?
Mods - please move wherever as appropriate
These same t*ts have been calling me for over a year now, same thing a diesel car I’ve never owned being mentioned, I’ve now blocked every number my phone doesn’t recognise. They’re persistent though, mostly London numbers but they’ve used, Leeds, Newcastle Ireland, Barrow in Furness, Bolton and Leeds in the last year. Always say the very English name with a strong Asian accent. I’ve tried telling them to FO, nothing works apart from blocking and they get directed to VM, never once have they left a message, scammy b*****ds!
Standard scam calls - usually from the same groups selling everything from government energy grants, insulation, HMRC rebates, service upgrades for xxx mobile network / ISP, etc.
I've never owned a diesel car in my life but last week i got a call claiming i have. Most of the time they're just after trying to get more info from you to add to database for any future scamming, bonus if they find someone stupid enough to actually hand over their personal details, banks details, etc.

Did you by any chance buy it from Sytner group?
I am having the same issue and the phone number I used in relation to the car was them, every other company/person has a different number as I gave my work mobile by mistake!
No, but it has been serviced by Sytner................Did you by any chance buy it from Sytner group?

Thanks for the reply. If it isn't them that have leaked it, they must have used some 3rd party company to hold my details or BMW UK have got them from Sytner and "lost" them!
I am 100% sure that only Sytner were given that particular number in relation to the car so am adamant they have something to do with it somewhere down the line!
Regards.
Rich.

I know its them as you get the telltale 'Bloop' when you pick up the phone (It connects to an agent)
I usually tell them to p
s off but my gf told me they can record your voice and then use AI to deepfake you to your bank. Not sure if thats b
ks or not.
Your girlfriend is presumably great in every other respect.I usually tell them to p

I don't know how it got sold, or by whom, but I get a tonne of these calls. Some for a BMW I haven't owned for 10 years, some for my Range Rover that I haven't owned for about 6 years, and even a few diesel emissions claims on my Vauxhall Calibra. Yes, you're right, they didn't make diesel ones at the factory and mine certainly isn't a diesel converted.

I have read an article recently saying that they ask you a simple question to get you to reply "yes" to, for example, which is recorded and used to somehow scam you. They probably record other key words as well.I usually tell them to p

The advice given is if you think you are receiving a scam call either don't answer, and if it is a legit call they will leave you a message, or just listen without saying anything until you are sure the call isn't to scam you.
I adopt the policy of not answering and waiting for the voice mail message which never materialises.
