True cost of car hire

I've sold my wife's car and not et replaced it. I was going to hire a small automatic for a week for her to try but although the charges are reasonable, the excesses and insurance to reduce the excesses are a bit hefty. I would never have over £1000 excess on my own car. (Enterprise car hire)

There are plenty of companies around that will sell you a policy to cover the excess, which is cheaper than the one sold by the hire firms and also covers more (the hire company policies often don't cover glass or tyres, do check!)
In the past I've used questor, I've seen them mentioned on here by others before too.
Haven't had to claim though, and remember you'd be charged the excess by the hire company and then claim it back from the excess insurers

Pay the extra excess waiver or don't pay and take the risk - it's a non-mandatory (rip-off) add-on after all!!!

That's a distinct possibility, got an online quote with Questor, very reasonable.

Having resolved the excess issue with the independent insurance solution, I asked how much to put myself, my wife and my daughter on the paperwork? £15.90 per additional driver, per day. This would more than double the cost for a week, so I've scrapped the idea. Why so much? We all meet the criteria and only one of us can drive it at any one time. It's a ripoff.

It's a higher risk as you'll be sharing the car so it could be in use all day whereas with one driver it's likely to be parked up most of the time. There's also the hassle of finding out who did what damage when it's handed back so much simpler for them to have 1 car = 1 driver per rental.

Couldn’t you persuade a friendly dealer to let you take an extended test drive in one ?

If it's a 'run of the mill car,' you could see if Cinch have any suitable? They offer 14 days money back, so plenty of time to see if it suits.

I had thought of this, we're clearly equally devious. I'll only do it if there's a car I may actually keep though.
