Do the MOT records shown by DVLA track the registration plate or the VIN number?

If a prIvate plate (for example X1 ABC) is on a BMW in 2020, then moves to a Ford in 2021, does the MOT history show me only the Ford tests or is it showing me the BMW test for 2020 and the Ford test for 2021?

It will show the complete MOT history for the car that the plate is currently on.

It should, and most of the time it does, but with any government website there are some exceptions that slip through

Follow on... could you mask a bad mot history by putting a private plate on?

Yes, when I transferred a plate off a TVR in 2019, the MoT record was incorrect. DVLA and DVSA kept blaming each other, somebody hadn't pressed a button or something. Only making a complaint got it sorted, took 6 weeks before the data was correct. rolleyes

I've moved plates about a dozen times and that was the only time it went wrong.
