You can only buy cars from one manufacturer for the rest of your life, who do you turn to? Harder than you might think, you are hedging your bets on what has gone before, what is made now, and where the brand will go in the future. Where does your confidence lie? Who has a back catalogue you could raid if you come into money, but makes current and future cars you think you can live with?

Has to be BMW for me. They do cars that cover most bases apart from a supercar but I'm on my 5th Beemer now and they just drive better than the equivalent competition. As much as a 911 is my favourite car, there's not much else from Porsche that I'd want.

Some great answers. Those picking BMW, or Mercedes...are you happy with where their design is going, aesthetic and engineering, or would you concentrate on older models? Guess a lot of that comes down to budget?

In terms of BMW, I tend to find I hate the looks when they first come out. I get used to them after a while and then warm to them over time. I've just bought an M440i GC and I hated the look of these things when they came out. I love it now. The latest gen interiors are another question. The current gen 3 and 4 series is absolutely awful. They've glued a wide screen curved TV to the dash and taken a tactile gear knob away in favour of a plastic toggle you'd find on a 1980's Aiwa record player.

This is the biggest issue for me. Obviously I'd say BMW, I've bought nothing else for years, but I see nothing in the future range I like which has never been the case before. Can't fault the engineering, but why do they have to look the way they now do inside and out?

And they should be around long enough to be happy to enjoy them for years to come

I was going to say Subaru as they are pretty unbreakable, cover most bases and have a decent back catalogue.

Having seen the suggestion of Toyota though I'd have to agree with that. Huge range and some very cool and interesting vehicles in there. Well built too.

BMW or Porsche the range is nowhere near broad enough.

It would have to be Toyota for me.

Which is odd given I don't currently own a Toyota, nor do I have any plans to buy one.
