Hi, i am looking at car hire for 10 days and i have found a decent price for what i need ,i have noticed that the damage waiver is include but excess protection is extra with a charge of £18 a day its something i would consider taking up but wondered if i could purchase this myself like i do with my legal cover on car insurance .If anyone as any experience on this and recommendations of a company to use it would be appreciated .Thanks

Yes, there are stand alone policies that you can purchase - a Google search reveals many options.

I will be using one to give third party liability and CDW cover for a hire car in Alaska.

Pretty certain that you can get cover for UK hire as well as worldwide- USA cover is typically more expensive.

Yep, far far cheaper to have a stand alone policy.

Some firms won’t cover certain ‘dubious’ rental companies due to over zealous damage claims hence why you were asked.

You can purchase your own separate cover and it can be cheaper, but you will be in a pay for the damage yourself and then claim it back situation if it did happen, so you'd presumably need good paperwork and damage reports etc. It can be less hassle to go with the car hire company's cover as you can then just walk away - something to bear in mind.

The price difference can be huge on longer rentals.
For a day or 2 i agree, just overpay with the rental company for an easy life.

I've held annual 3rd party excess insurance for many years. only needed it once and it was very straightforward.
I was charged and invoiced by the rental, i forwarded that to the excess insurer and i was paid within 14 days.
All within the same credit card cycle.

I generally never bother with these options and roll the dice, taking my chances with rentals. Touch wood never had the need to invoke or pay for anything, as I generally find it’s a waste of money

Use the airline car hire, or Google cheap car hire for third party agencies where you want the car, they amount to the same thing.

They usually offer insurance at much lower daily levels than the car hire company if you rent rarely.

Annual if you rent more often, mine is 90 odd quid for two of us, worldwide.

You will probably find a better deal on the car you want too.
