Are there companies that have the ability to gett in touch with an owner to see about buying their plate?

I'm after a plate that's in use, I'm 99% sure was issued as a general registration to the car and to the owner is probably worthless. If there are such companies has anyone used one and know what kind of fee they charge?

There is no way you or any other company that says they can will be able to do this because of the data protection regulations

but if you were a slightly dodgy parking management outfit you might claim to DVLA that the vehicle bearing the plate you were interested in had just breached the regs in your car park so could i please have keeper details...

and then you wake up and eat your cornflakes. Wont be possible to find anyone that would help you find out the owner in an underhand manner. Why? because as soon as you contact that owner the risk of problems coming back goes up exponentially

Not if you drive to the location of the registered keeper and put a note under the windscreen wiper. “Hi, I was walking past your car and noticed your number plate…”

Never going to get the details though. Unless the car’s ever for sale and a google search of the reg plate returns a result.

But it is just as likely to be on retention or sorn etc

You could put the registration number into the MOT History Check site and it will show if its registered on a car, you can also use one of the other Government sites to check that its still taxed.

DVLA.

I've been contacted twice in the past 25 years. Received a letter from DVLA, stating that someone is interested in purchasing one of your plates, here is their name/number if you would like to contact them.

I did both times, explaining that I have no intention of selling, and do not need the money, therefore you have to buy me out of the plate. I gave a figure, about 3 times the value (I would have been happy to part with), they weren't interested, I left them my number and said call me direct if you want.

Any number tells you where it was first registered. If its quite a new one you can get the original registration date from the DVLA website, then hang out around the local main dealer for about a month prior to the anniversary hoping it goes in for a service.

PS, This is highly unlikely to be of any use and even less so if the car is more than a couple of years old

You could tell us what the number you’re looking for is. Someone might know someone?

Your best approach is to see if it’s actually listed for sale by checking through numerous number plate dealers then negotiate. You assume it’s of no interest to current owner but likely is if it’s not listed for sale. There are lots of facebook number plate groups you could ask by sharing the details of the plate you’re interested in.
