Can A Dear Tax A Car For You Without Logbook
Discussion
Hello,
A family member has just purchased a used car but on collection the dealer had misplaced the logbook. They didn't take the car away as it isn't currently taxed. The dealer said they would tax the car tomorrow for them and deliver it. Can they do this without the logbook?
The family member doesn't have off road parking so they dont want it delivered if not taxed.
Thank you

Yes , they can do a V62 and tax at Post Office or failing that there s a few people offering services to the trade who can tax a car without V5 - it s above board afaik, have used them a few times myself.
It isn't though, and that is why a fee comes with it, if it was above board everyone would do it. They somehow obtain the v5 details. It is offered because just going to the post office and filling a V62 doesn't always work and some post offices won't do it at all.
It usually works if you know the postcode of the previous keeper and put it in the box on the form at the very bottom

Not everyone has access to the background taxing system though. You might be right, I don t know but the fact the most well known person offering this service has a website with contact details, full name etc and has been doing it for many years suggests to me it is.It is offered because just going to the post office and filling a V62 doesn't always work and some post offices won't do it at all.
