Something my driving instructor told me back in the early 90s and that I’ve applied with additional seconds added for poor road and weather conditions for over 3 decades.
I seem to remember it being on a public service advertisement back when media was way less fragmented.

“Tyres & Tarmac”
Never picked this up whilst learning to drive but sticks to this day from a mandated work driving course.
(When pulling up behind a vehicle, always stay far enough to see their tyres on the tarmac)
“Look where your driving - Far-middle-near)”
Think it’s just good practice to be aware of as much as possible, but it’s sometimes surprising how poor some drivers awareness is at all ranges especially distance- can usually be seen by how they brake or react to something. (I think driving country roads growing up you were far more aware of things like passing places ahead to avoid meeting & having to reverse)

Our mandated driving assessments were as so many nationalities with different rules working in different countries, I remember the trainer (classroom based days before practical) saying flash of lights means “I am here” but don’t use. He’d been doing an assessment where the person being assessed, keen to show awareness & how courteous he was, flashed to a car waiting to come on as he accelerated to create a space behind him for the car, as was the norm where he was from…..

Never travel faster than the distance that you need to stop.
I live in Rochdale - the same rule is worth applying in places like Oldham, Bradford, Dewsbury, Luton etc - never ever ever drive through a green traffic light without checking, always assume that someone is either jumping the light or is shooting down the outside of the stopped cars and straight through the red light. Especially on a motorbike. These people will leave you badly injured or dying and run off. This rule has saved me from being t-boned countless times.
