What 6 marques should every petrolhead aspire to own at some point?

Mine:
Lotus - the feel
Jag - the ride
Porsche (f6) - the package
RenaultSport. - the fun
TVR - the theatre
BMW (I6) - the engine

Saab (for the “Extra” switch)
Citroen (for the weirdness and waftiness)

I've only ever wanted one...Porsche for me, I have one and I am very happy.

A shed, a Lexus, something at least 40 years old, a Caterham, an original Mini/2CV etc .

MX5. I’ll likely be buying one soon to start racing in the local series in 2026. It’s probably the cheapest option and a number of my friends have them so I won’t be stuck for parts. I originally wanted a Mini, but having watched a few races the Mini drivers all have a death wish and the MX5s run a reverse grid for the second race so I will likely be on pole.

Ducati,Ferrari,Maserati are three I want to tick off.

I've not had a Maserati or an Alfa, but do have two Lotuses, two rotaries and an Alpina to make up for it.

I think the fact Stellantis now own Maserati will probably mean I never own one.

My list then is:

Lotus
Alpina petrol
Rotary

I'd like to add a Saab, Alfa and Maserati to my own experience.

Owned none of those. I would have a more generic approach.

1. An American V8
2. A light sports car - Lotus, MX5 etc
3. A basic utilitarian car in its basic form - 2CV, Panda, Mini
4. A hot hatch - Type R, ST, RS etc

Can't narrow it down to marques...

Something old and American. (Pref' with muscle.)

Something old and British. (Pref' quaint and charming.)

Something light, fast and minimal. (Prob' a kit.)

Something you can't take seriously. (A sporty 2CV for example.)

Something with three wheels. (Morgan, Pembleton, or similar, or a sidecar outfit.)

Something with two wheels. (Pretty much anything... )

Basically, just anything that puts a smile on your face...

I've had 2 original Minis when I was 17 & 19 years old. BMW - a couple of those over the years. Currently own a Ducati - yep, it is much more 'special' than any Japanese or Austrian bike I've owned.
I would love to have the following:
Maserati Quatroporte
V10 BMW M5
Dodge Viper
Volvo 850 estate touring car from the 90's
Bentley Blower for a bit of a laugh on a Sunday afternoon
Triumph Rocket
CF Moto utility vehicle as featured in Clarkeson's Farm....

I know an Alfa is usually on these sort of lists, but I think I got near enough with a couple of twin-cam 70s Fiats!

I'd add something with a V8 to the list, even if mine was only a Rover 3500S.

I've always wanted to own a Jaguar but most of their models after the MK2 have been just too big. XE might have been an option if only they had made any with a decent engine and a manual gearbox.

Agree with the BMW straight 6 suggestion, even if I didn't get one until 2014. But I'm now on numbers 5 and 6. Maybe add anything with an N/A "S" engine.

A 2 seater perhaps?

IDK about specific marques and frankly you're not getting me on a Ducati, but every PHer - barring those physically unable - really needs to have a bike at some point. They're just a necessary thing. You are not a petrolhead (repeating my disability caveat) if you have stayed only on 4 wheels.

I'd also say the same for pedal bike. And to be a pedestrian. And if you live anywhere near where they are legal, you need to have a go at an e-scooter scheme. And while in a way a proper bike is a superset, a stty moped is useful too as is a rubbish hire car. Oh and you also need to drive abroad in various locations including the third world. And for that reason also you need to have a go at off roading.

And anyone serious about swift road driving (which doesn't have to be the case to be a PHer by any means) needs to drive a van and HGV at some point too. I've not driven a bus yet but suspect if I could somehow give one a go that I'd also see a legit reason that you need to drive one of those too to understand things.

I didn't include bikes, but I'd recommend a 2 stroke having owned quite a few!

But I only had push-bikes until I was old enough to get a moped. Why pedal when you could have an ICE?

Lol no (and we own one and are happy with it, it's great as a family SUV that can do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds or whatever it is but there are many other EVs like that now and it has no soul).

There's coming an argument that every enthusiast should have a high performance EV but idk if that's now and there's definitely no reason it has to be a Tesla.

I'm not sure I would limit it specific car manufacturers. I suggest an alternative would be:

Every petrol head should aim to own at least one car they truly loved, a car everyone else loved but they did not, a car that had many great adventures and a car they absolutely hated.
