Personally I couldn't imagine a car not being fitted with a radio, but times they are a changing! Over to you for thoughts please....

I’ve not used the ‘radio’ in a car for the best part of 20 years, I’ve always streamed from my phone.

No, no, really keep up at the back there Earthdweller!

8 tracks, thing of the past, my daily has a compact cassette player, so modern (can't remember if I have ever put a tape in it though).

I think the built in radio will fade out for a lot of people, but I would miss it. Streaming is fine when the signal is good, yet on a long drive through the desert outside Albuquerque it drops out and the local stations still work. I also like being able to turn a knob and hear traffic or weather without picking up my phone. A simple backup like that still feels useful in a new car.

I’d probably say that Radio 2 is on in my cars 66% of the time. The remainder is going to be 25% music on USB (MP3/FLAC) and then finally streaming services.

I can’t stand the drop-outs when travelling through signal black spots.

It staggers me that there are still people out there who listen to radio or watch broadcast TV services? Why? Genuinely, why? Inane chatter and music picked for you indispersed with annoying ads and jingles. Jeez, go get a Spotify or Apple Music subscription.

The only exemption is live sport I suppose, and I listen to TMS, though still streamed through an app.

Its not that new a thing surely. J reg base model e36 came without a radio. You could choose one from a range and pay for it at the dealer or just take it with a blanking plate and fit your own. That was a nice car back then compared to the competition too.

I have pretty much given up streaming amazon music / spotify / internet radio etc from my phone. There are so many times that the signal drops out that it is incredibly frustrating, and then distracting getting it to start again.

DAB pretty useless too, and has an appalling bitrate.

There are very few places that FM radio drops out.

I never get drop outs when playing CD's wink and they sound SO much better than all of the above (although a good FM signal isn't bad).

I've never tried any of that streaming malarkey, it's way beyond my abilities!

DAB often goes quiet with the head unit saying "No Signal" even though I only live 5 miles or so outside the M25.

FM is better, but many of the decent stations seem to have moved to DAB. Absolute Radio is now only on DAB, replaced by Greatest Hits crap on FM.

CDs are my salvation!

Radio in the car : wife immediately put that inane claptrap of radio2 on she claims it's for the traffic, son runs Radio 1 anthems, i don't unless it's R3.
I prefer the CD player or depending upon which car I'm in the music on my 'phone Btoothed to a stand along speaker.
Up here DAB is something for sherbet, we can get the BBC main stations but the drop out when you go through some trees or behind a cliff
I used to love radio but it's turned into gormless "personalities" chatting to "uninteresting" phone in people, like facebook on the radio

.

TMS is literally the definition of inane chatter, for five days!

I mostly listen to the radio for the informative chatter and the music picked for me.

My car has it's radio permanently tuned to Classic FM (which amusingly is on DAB despite the name). I have fitted a useful little device made by Invery which plugs into the Ipod socket in the armrest to allow me to play music from my S24 Ultra, and of course it has the CD player should I wish.

That said, it's mostly the radio I listen to. Yes I know i could stream everything off the phone, but given there's still adverts even if I DO do that (because like hell am I paying again for music i already bought once) and invariably its an advert telling that I have Ad goals, but my fans have squad goals (whatever the devil THAT has to do with my playlist) I'm really not troubled by some dulcet tones trying to sell me a Viking river cruise or somesuch.

Not everyone lives off their phone, some of us still have a life away from screens, and data that will not really go as far as being played on a phone coz we dont spend every waking second on it so only need a basic plan.

I still listen to CDs mainly, radio I find annoying at times. But if I listen it is usually something like 5 live or a talk show without music

Of course it ‘staggers’ you. How bloody stupid. You serious don’t envisage people simply enjoying the radio as background chatter, or not having to select anything in particular. You don’t think it’s easier for some people to just turn the ignition on and their preferred radio station just comes on straight away with no need to do anything else, or maybe just switch the telly on and wait for their favourite programme? You honestly can’t fathom why someone would do this? What an oddball you must be.

BBC 6Music has minimal chatter and no ads, and is where I've discovered tons of new music over the years.
Where else will you find about about new bands/singers if not the radio (or Jools Holland smile) ?
