New Mercedes-AMG GT goes on sale in UK

You can only buy the 585hp GT 63 over here - and you'll need 911 Turbo money to do it

The more usable, possibly slightly better looking and certainly still V8-powered Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4Matic is now available to order in the UK. You might recall that there’s a GT 55 beneath the more powerful 585hp version, mirroring the equivalent SL - but that won’t be available over here from launch. Instead, you’ll have to make do with the full-blooded derivative in one of three trim levels. It starts at £164,765.

This puts the car firmly in Porsche 911 Turbo territory, which, on the basis of power and pedigree, is absolutely the rival Mercedes is targeting. The latest GT, now in 2+2 format and with standard all-wheel drive and ‘improved all-round visibility’ has acquired a newfound focus on everyday usage - precisely the qualities that Porsche customers tend to favour when buying a high-spec 911. As we suggested when the new AMG GT was revealed back in the summer, it is these buyers that Mercedes will hope to persuade.

Accordingly, there are three trim levels to choose from. All get the familiar 4.0-litre V8 with the nine-speed MCT transmission; all get from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and go on to 196mph. Similarly, all are equipped with rear-axle steering and AMG’s electronic limited-slip diff at the back. So for the most part, the difference between Premium Plus (£164,765), Performance (£175,765) and the inevitable Launch Edition (£180,765) is cosmetic or equipment-based.

We won’t dive into the minutia here - all details are now available on the Mercedes UK site - but suffice it to say no variant is poorly equipped, although if you want a racier look (i.e. with additional flicks at the front, a fixed rear spoiler and AMG Performance seats inside) plus the carbon ceramic brakes, you’re better off going for the mid-tier option that slightly undercuts the £180,600 you’ll pay for a 911 Turbo S. Of course, if money is no object, the Launch Edition adds a carbon trim exterior package and a particularly fetching set of 21-inch Manufaktur forged wheels in matte Techgold amongst other things. Or you could wait for the E Performance plug-in hybrid version that’ll almost certainly turn up next year with more than 800hp.

After a quick glance at the picture I thought it was the next generation 911!

Cynics have often said that the easiest car design role must be designing a new 911 so evolutionary is each new design.

If I look at that rear three quarter view of this I see 911. Have Mercedes poached the same design team?

Mercedes pricing strategy baffles me, the whole range how appears overpriced...

This should be more in the £120-£140k range imo.

Also, a Carrera GTS is closer to this performance wise than a Turbo S and that starts at £40k less!

Looks great but it's a dear do but then again it was never going to be cheap was it, I think the 911 aping styling works.

I agree with the previous poster. Mercedes pricing is very toppy (But most mauntacturers pricing is well above what is expected) and the GT should be in the range of £120K- £140K. I suppose the good news is that it si around £20K cheaper than the SL. One 6 months old having lost around £30K could be a good buy

I think it looks great, but that's an awful lot of money.

if you spec a 911 with options, it'll cost more.

This is also better looking.

I have a problem with this. It’s pretty similar in power and price to the original 2010 AMG SLS, but that was a much more interesting car with its gullwing doors. Each generation since has got a bit more boring and mainstream IMO.

So it's a SL with a fixed roof?
No longer a "pure" AMG product?

That is way too expensive - needs to be £110k tops

Yes, very nice. I like the previous AMG GT, but I like the idea of 4WD.

It does look good, but the 911 Turbo has grown corpulent over the years and this is much bigger and weighs as much as a small town (400kg more than a TurboS!).

From Mercedes: 'the AMG Carbon Exterior package with its lightweight components in carbon fibre underscores the proximity to motorsport'... 'I could'a been a contender!' indeed.

It's a good looking car but from that rear 3/4 view it's a 911. As others have said I genuinely though it was another 911 model they'd introduced when I saw the deadline pic.

I'm sure it's better all round but I think it's lost the uniqueness of the old one. The old GT did a great job of evolving the design of the SLS, this one just looks like they rounded all the edges off. It's lost that cab back, long bonnet, side stance look to me. Maybe it looks a bit more distance in the metal.

I do like the look of this but as others have said i think it looks more 911 than the current 911.

When a C63 is now knocking on for £100k, it's hardly surprising this is £165k.

Just be glad it still has a V8 wink

A V8 911 at last! Think I'd take one of these over a Porsche. And it would sound better too.

Having actually ran an SLS back in the day I can assure you this new car will be a hell of a lot easier to live with; the SLS was a real pain to daily and I do not miss it, at all.
