Smart #5 Brabus launched with 646hp

Brabus has been building Smart flagships for more than 20 years - it aims for peak silliness here

You might not have heard of the Smart #5, it being a fairly conventional electric mid-size crossover and therefore about as interesting as a chest freezer. But you’ll have definitely heard of Brabus - and likely recall that its collaborations with Smart (a joint Mercedes/Geely venture, after all) are long-standing. In previous years, some of these have stretched credibility to breaking point, so it’s fair to say the new Smart #5 Brabus - a 646hp answer to a question it’s hard to believe anyone was asking - has plenty of company.

“As the most powerful electric SUV ever in our joint lineup, it is all about pushing our design and engineering to the absolute maximum, delivering an electrifying ‘One-Second-Wow’ effect that truly stands out,” reckons Constantin Buschmann, Brabus CEO. If 21-inch wheels, matte paint, red accents, and a slightly weird-looking diffuser are your idea of ‘wow’, then mission accomplished. Inside, you get microfibre seats, a panoramic halo roof, sports pedals, Brabus badges and ambient lighting with 256 colour options to go with Brabus lettering which is also illuminated.

Underneath, the tuner has applied itself in inimitable style. Even allowing for the fact that ‘tuning’ an electric car is often no more difficult than opening a laptop, the fact that the headline output starts with a ‘6’ does suggest it’s in keeping with Brabus’s rule about going hard or going home. In Launch mode, the firm reckons you’ll get to 62mph in 3.8 seconds - which sounds about right in a world taking leave of its senses. Naturally, the flagship is all-wheel drive, and though Brabus doesn’t mention it, we’ll assume it has taken steps for its Smart #5 to not fall over at the first corner.

It does mention that the car is built on an 800-volt platform and supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 400kW, which means that the unchanged 100kWh battery ought to get from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes, should you have stopped at the right German service station. Ultimately, assuming optimal conditions, the Smart #5 Brabus should deliver a range of up to 335 miles and apparently comes with an exclusive driving mode that simulates engine sounds. Something to look forward to, eh? No word on the price - the car goes on sale in the UK later this year - but, as ever, we’d recommend thinking of a plausible figure, then doubling it.

It isn't a 'looker' is it, although, as they said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I'm here for it as the Smart #1 Brabus was capable of easily embarrassing more expensive and powerful Brabus products and that car only had 428bhp:-

646bhp will possibly make it outdrag almost everything else Brabus currently fettles!

The Smart resurrection really is an odd one. Outside of car anorak circles the only connotation the badge has ever had is geeky little eco things you used to be able park at right angles to the curb. Even within car anorak circles all you can add to that is an otherwise-interesting pocket-sized roadster let down by its gearbox and a rebadged Mitsubishi Colt no-one ever really understood the point of.

Are they really so desperate to have literally any European badge that they're prepared to work around all the baggage associated with the phrase "Smart car" for it?

Think this looks cool - i really like the smart #1 & 3... was ready to order the Volvo ex30 twin motor but decided to check out the smart #1 and honestly apart from styling (always subjective) it blows it away in terms of spec, useability, interior design, and ease of use.

The #5 brabus will offer bmw ix m60 performance and practicality for i'm sure a massive amount less. Main downside to this is that with a 100kw battery the range should be much bigger than 335miles really.

At that power and being electric I'd expect the 0-60 to be quite a bit faster than 3.8.

Yeah, weird when 3.8 seconds to sixty sounds sort of underwhelming isnt it ?

I would expect it will realistically dip under three seconds, wouldn't do to overshadow Brabus's *much* more expensive offerings with a little EV now would it ?

This. I have no idea what Smart as a brand is supposed to be.

I’ve had a Smart #1 for almost 12 months and 25k miles. It’s been absolutely fantastic and as a brand owned by Mercedes and Geely it is very well built and has some lovely design touches. This Brabus edition I believe has absolutely nothing to do with Brabus other than rights to utilise the name and create a pseudo sporty variant.

I will be looking at the #5 in either of the other two variants including Summit which is an off road style. I think the article is written in a very poor style, what happened did nobody invite the PH journalists to a freebie?
