my plan this year was to retire my current car - Golf GTI - to summer use only and buy another daily driver. I don't have a garage/offroad parking for a second car.

A 2014 Leon diesel has been lined up to become my daily driver and I've found a car storage place for the Golf over this winter,
I'm struggling to find car insurance to cover this scenario.

My current insurer - Esure - won't cover a 2nd vehicle.

The online insurance quote places don't have flexibility I need eg the Golf will get used for say 5K miles a year in the summer and will be in storage the rest of the time. The answers to where its kept, usage etc don't cover my situation.

The best solution I can find at this moment is to start a 2nd policy for the Leon and just let the Golf policy run as is. Golf policy runs to July 2027.

Do I need to find a more specialist insurance company and talk to somebody on the phone?
Plenty of folk on here must have a daily driver and a 'summer car' - how do you do it?

One of those occasions not to try and use a comparison site.
Try a broker like Howdens ( the old A plan ) - from memory it’s the Thatcham office that is best.
Alternatively a google of car insurance brokers will bring up other names.

I find separate policies is cheaper and build UK NCB

Brokers either too pricey or spend ages on the phone

Golf you can do on a limited mileage one for example

For a number of years I used Hastings Direct, when I bought another car instead of starting from scratch they put my full no-claims on the new car, only after one year had passed they allowed me to protect my new NCB.

When I first got a second car in 2014 A Plan (now Howden) got me a policy with Allianz that mirrored the NCD on my other car.

Made a Third Party claim against Hastings in 2023 and would actively avoid them.

I have two cars one of which only does 3k miles a year max and is a road legal track car. I took out a second policy and started from scratch ith it building up NCD again, it's insured with Greenlight Insurance because it's modified but they can probably help with your Golf too

You'll often find that if you speak with your current insurer, they may match your current NCD and you can take out a second policy based on that.

I have done that several times with a few different insurance firms. Admiral actually spotted another policy didn't have the same NCD as the one I was discussing with them and matched it whilst I was on the phone with them.

As above (only to add more voices) - do a moneysupermarket search (£15 for each policy bonus, and no stupid cat) - you'll find, so long as you are not too young, how much NCB you have makes not a huge difference. Plus, as said, a phone call will often kick an insurer into giving you "phantom" NCB - they'll match your real NCB to your new policy, at least in price, if not actual "printed" NCB. They know your risk level, and that doesn't change with 2 cars, well, it does, it decreases in terms of damage risk as you can't drive both at the same time, unless you have named drivers too.

I've a transit van, with 8 years NCB (4th vehicle). I've renewed at £180.

There is an incorrect claim record from 2 years ago on the CUE database (that I'm getting removed). Until this is resolved, my premium has gone up........ £17.

I would second this.

Not had the same situation, but brokers can tell and advise you, its their job.

A-plan (Thatcham branch) are certainly the go to for kitcars and ive used the for ny Westfield for a very long time, and they where for instance able to confirm that ts not an issue if its stored in a covered box trailer on the drive, vs directly on the drive, or in the garage.

Likewise I've used RH (now also Howdens) for the Austin 12 vintage car, which is their speciality. Emma Airey is head of specialist insurance there, and appears to be really great, and very well respected.

Howdens Thatcham office has schemes for modified cars - maybe Classics too?

I got my modified BMW Z4M insured through them last year.
