Vehicle storage
Discussion
Not sure where is the best place to ask this...
I'm getting to the point where myself and a couple of friends require vehicle storage. Probably about 10-12 vehicles in the long term.
I've been looking on rightmove and you can buy warehouses for semi-reasonable money... are there any issues with doing that?
If we paid for independent vehicle storage, we're looking at £15k+ per year...

How much will it cost to buy somewhere big enough for 12 cars? Odds are there'll be an annual service charge on top plus business rates. Unless it's pure storage you need space around the cars so do your calculations carefully.I'm getting to the point where myself and a couple of friends require vehicle storage. I've always found the best way with this is a friendly local farmer that has a spare barn, it's generally a who you know situation rather than anything being advertised.
Obviously depends on the cars, but mine are generally lower price wise so a farmers barn to store and tinker with them in is perfectly fine.

A friends dad bought an old (brick built) factory to turn into storage for cars and the costs involved have been high, with lots of preparation/repair required before he was happy to leave a number of cars parked there securely.
Off the top of my head he’s had to deal with..
- making good any issues and/or repointing needed on the walls.
- proper lighting.
- electrical work.
- plumbing work.
- sealing the floor.
- lots of floor tiles.
- repairs to the roof, which will need rectified fully at some point but is a large undertaking.
- installation of a considerable amount of high end security.
This is before all the security stuff went in and after the flooring was finished. It’s a brilliant place now he’s belt & braces’d it..

I’m sure you could reduce costs in each area to some degree but the purchase cost is just the start of the spending if you want peace of mind leaving cars parked there.. and depending on where it is you may face other risks, flooding/vermin/increased threat of theft and/or malicious damage.
It starts to make the cost and peace of mind with proper storage look quite appealing when you add up the outlay and weigh up the potential risks/headaches you could have with your own place.

I use Silverstone Car storage for my own car, the vehicles are insured on site & left on a battery tender if you wish.
The building is kept at a constant 19 degrees , so anything in storage stays in perfect condition.
Always an interesting place to go to when your collecting/dropping off you car/bike..
