Last night tootling along a quiet A road by me, come up behind someone doing 40ish, check its safe to overtake (the part was a very long straight, no lighting apart from our headlights). Nothing coming the other way so I indicate and pull out as you do, upon passing the car, just before i'm coming back over suddenly some headlights start flashing right infront of me...

Some prick was driving down a pitch black road with no headlights on, how the hell he could see where he was going I do not know and why he was flashing at me like I had done something wrong I also do not know.

Thankfully I could get in in time, he continued off behind me still with his lights off, hopefully he ended up in a ditch at the next corner.

The car I overtook should have had full beam on really then maybe I would of been able to see said car coming the other way but still, how fking stupid can you get.

Well sorry but I don't see what the problem is with overtaking on a long straight road (your probably talking half a mile+ of straight road), perfectly within the speed limits and as far as your perfect vision can tell there is nothing coming the other way. Its not like you ever expect to find somebody driving in the middle of nowhere in the pitch black with no lights on, i don't know how its even possible to get round a corner which you can't see.

I love the way someone on pistonheads will always try and blame the OP regardless of the situation.

How much blame would you apportion to the OP?

+1

I can't really see how you can blame the OP too much. Ok, you question overtaking when the chap in front has dipped lights but that depends on a lot (that we don't know about)

What so you should never overtake in the dark in case there's a numpty without headlights on coming the other way?confused

Or a horse, or bit of tree, or a skip etc etc. Look and look again.

No,you should never go headlong into the 'dark' full stop.
It worries me that anyone thinks it's ok to drive ,pesumably at speed, when there is not enough illumination on the road ahead. If the overtaken cars lights are not on full beam then put yours on when pulling out, although in this case the slower car had possibly dipped his lights because of the oncoming car!

If I read it correctly, which I think I did, then how is the OP to blame?

Nonsense.

If I'm following a car at night and he's not using his full beams, then if I want to pass him I put mine on anyway. It will only cause him mild inconvenience for a second or so until I'm past. That may be viewed as a selfish act by me, but the way I see it is that if they play by the rules then so will I. If they don't then I might not either. (Same logic applies to undertaking numpties sitting in lane 3 when lane 1 and 2 are clear. I'll undertake.)

Because "OP is a faggot"? rolleyes

Assuming other people will follow the rules of the road seems like a blameless act to me. Whereas driving with no headlamps in the dark seems very, very stupid.

Good god, I'd been warned that GG had descended into a bear pit, but this thread is wierd beyond belief.

OP doesn't have any blame here, he is executing an absoultely routine manouever, something we have all done many times. Of course you don't expect to find an oncoming car with no lights in the carriage way.

I find it very odd that people post the "perfect driver' comments without thinking of the logical conclusion (ie don't take your car out of the garage there *might* be a child lying on your driveway that you can't see.

Car infront was just someone who doesn't use full beam I guess as i'd been sat behind them for a mile or so before coming onto the straight where i overtook and they'd not had their beams on for any of that despite it being dark still.

Perhaps I could have put my full beams on as i pulled out but that would piss me off if someone did it to me so I wouldn't do it to someone else, you just don't expect to find someone driving in the pitch black in the middle of nowhere.

Seriously, how could you navigate round corners etc with your lights off and more importantly not think to yourself hang on, why can't I see the road.

Lol the old 'I can see so why do I need lights trick'! I pulled onto a local round about last year only to be taken by surprise when suddenly from behind I was assaulted with a barrage of horns, lights and fist shaking - It was close to midnight and the guy had no lights on, the round about is unlit (council saves money by not switching on the lights! no seriously, Peterborough City Council - were good ideas are null and void!) Quite how I was supposed to see him in the dark I will never know smile

Strangely enough I remember an episode of LA Ink, a guy was having a tattoo to commemorate his son - he had reversed his 4x4 off his drive/lawn/whatever and was totally unaware that his son was right behind the rear corner, killing him outright! Very very sad frown

Even more bizarre is that after some years since seeing that I always walk to the back of my Disco before reversing it off the drive as we have two young'uns our selves and there are a good 5-10 neighbouring kids who play out in the street a lot?

I was thinking 10pc knows all too well what can happen if you travel on the wrong side of the road with limited visibilty.

I am aware of that, but even so some of the sanctimonious clap trap on here is just a little odd at times, and the tone and aggresiveness is very uncalled for.

Life is risk, we make calculated judgements all the time, I would have done exactly as the OP did, lit or unlit, its why it is called the unexpected. You can't plan for everything, limit your risk by all means but heck even good drivers can get caught out sometimes.

Pah, you should have already assumed someone would be coming the other way with no lights on. Call yourself a Pistonheader? You've a long way to go before you reach PH Driving God status sonny boy! biggrin

Funny how people are quick to judge words. Thought I'd leave it and see what comes up.

Why do people presume to think I'm putting blame on the OP?

The point is simple- has the OP learned anything, and has the experience modified his behaviour? I would wager he will now be more cautious in low light conditions in making the assumption that everyone always uses their lights whenever he thinks it's appropriate.

That's all it was. Nice to see folk jumping up and down in pointless rage about it, though.
