quote tags not working

Dunno if I'm just being fik but try as I might I can't get quote tags to work. Is there some arcane trick required?

Did you try [quote=] as the first tag?

Yeah, tried [quote], [quote=] and [quote=name] - none of which would work

Only works if you've got matching pairs of quote/unquote.

I'd already figured that one out

See, now this works - but if I try to manually add quote tags it doesn't seem to want to know half the time.
