Is there anyway of controling who you have as "mates" on here like on other sites?

What I mean is, I can add anyone to my mates list without them knowing it but isn't there a way of them having to accept or decline the offer? Just curious.........

I think that's a bad idea personally, but only because that way i wouldn't have any mates

I wondered that, but i really don't have any mates anyway so i assumed it was just lost on me but meant something to others.

I have a couple of people added as mates even though it's supposed to say when they're online it doesn't (from what I can tell it doesn't), also MrReg has this next to his name " "?

I was just about to ask similar:
Thought it might just be 'chassis', who I added as a 'mate' when I was reading some of his threads just as a link to his profile, which I assumed would be fine, then I spotted the image/ icon there.
