Why are some profanties completely censored and some keep the first and last letter?

It's a pain having to quote somebody to see what word they really meant to type... For example, somebody was having a rant about s but I didn't know if he was talking about s or s until I quoted him.

Wouldn't it make more sense just to keep the first letter of every profanity?
