...the other hidden forums
Tell me more...The purpose of them is selective viewing/responses.
@ markmullen; Ive not used PH for car chat in years. There are shed loads of us who, perhaps previous tvr or specialist car owners, are attracted for the banter.
You might read the food forum, or not. Or the photography forum. Whichever.
I could direct enough personal friends to fill a relationship forum. We don't have one.
A few hours ago, it was the end of the world over here, or felt like it. I don't think a slowly growing relationship sub section, like the many other hidden forums here, would be a bad thing.
Invite only. Hidden is the only way. You may not see 15,000 posts under my name, but I've made that many, ph is a home of sorts, it's big enough to substantiate the creation of said forum, many of us don't want to join other forums ... For most of the time, ph is all we need.
So, about that closed invite-only relationship forum... ?
It has been discussed on threads in here before it was IIRC NOT a path we wished to venture down.
As Mark said it's primarily an Automotive website, agree we have lots of spin off sub forums to discuss other things, but it was felt at the time that the Lounge would suffice for these types of topic.
HTH.

I dont think PH needs the responsibility of housing this kind of person, in that kind of way. There are phone lines that cater for depressed members of the public, funded by the government and insured against incident. I can only imagine the possible backlash associated with groups of 'on the edge' people. I dont want to delve too deeply into it and i do feel for people who need help (ive been there), but say for instance there was a suicidal person posting his last desperate words on here. Would the head-shed at PH towers be happy knowing it was going on, and on thier turf? Its a can of worms waiting to burst.

There are enough difficulties operating a forum for reasonable people. I can imagine that a forum for the less than completely balanced could a nightmare. At Best!Mobsta said:
We need a relationships forum. Invite only, like the other hidden forums. Some of us need to talk, vent... The lounge just isn't the place.
There are times I wish I was f
king dead. That goes for a lot of us.
Now please can I have my closed forum so I can vent.

How would you set the citeria?
Joe Bloggs may have been through exactly the same situation and be able to help, but because he's not in the 'clique' that can see the hidden forum, he can't help you.
Use the Lounge, it is read enough that you get serious answers, and the pisstaking helps too

Or Health Matters for a more serious, but less browsed area?

No, genuinely, Im not in the least bit depressed with life. At all
I can see how my initial post may have made it seem that way.
Besides which, historically Ive been the one on the phones, giving the advice, with years worth of training in dispensing said advice etc.
What I meant to state more clearly, is that a very small, very niche closed forum within which PHers (car folk) could rant quietly amongst each other, in an environment entirely dissimilar to, say, the Lounge.
I lost track of the number of PHers who I bantered on the phone with, or just chatted about general problems with/helped out from time to time years ago.
How would folk get invited? Easily enough... Every couple of weeks, someone drops a hint that they have a genuinely difficult or unpleasant scenario on their hands. Very occasionally I'll drop someone a PM, make sure they are OK etc... and end up hearing their whole life story back in a single email or two. Things they couldn't possibly share on PH.
Its folk who find them in situations like these whom Id recommend let off some steam in a closed relationships/chat type area of the site.
As for PH being about "just cars" - clearly its not.
Just a thought.

So, someone you know can let slip that they are not happy and instead of picking up the phone (as you do now) they get invited into a 'private' forum to share things they couldn't share in public?
The question was, how do you decide who else is in there to listen?
Same as the London Tunnelers forum, Id imagine. The question was, how do you decide who else is in there to listen?
Show interest, receive an invite... id guess.
Then turn up and enjoy/banter/etc.
Which takes months
How would they know to show an interest?
Who decides if they are worthy? For example (and he's a mate so I know he won't mind!) Council Baby can be a bit brash and a tad crude in the lounge at times, not the 'sort' that would naturaly be invited to comment on a relationship issue, or hard time that someone is having as he is better known for his drinking exploits & sense of humour - but you'd be suprised by the hidden depths that we all have.
As I said earlier, how would you know that Joe Blogs, who is not known for his sensitivity hasn't been through exactly the same issue and so be able to advise?
Far, far bette to leave in the Lounge (or Health Matters) where everyone can see - I know people moan about them in there, but I also know that those moaners will send PMs rather than put stuff in public
