Spaces in user names?

Bit confused, I tried to change my nick and got a message saying that it shouldn't contain any special characters.

Now, other than a space or two, it doesn't, it's just letters, and there are plenty of users who have just letters and spaces in their user names.

What gives?

AIUI, change of policy. Those that have queer characters can retain them, new users and name changers can't.
