Changing user-name bug?

I tried to change my username back to sneaky schnell and got the following message.

Login name should not contain any special characters, please choose just numbers or letters.

I tried a few other names at it doesn't seem to allow spaces. Is this a bug or something else?

I recall someone else having this problem too, you can't have spaces in your username anymore.

Can you confirm if this is a change of policy, as is suggested in the linked thread? I like to change my name once in a while and it would be a shame if I can't any more.

No spaces in names any more.
Mostly due to data validation issues. There was a code hole, and one of the simple ways to sort it was to block spaces. We don't have anything against them in names.

And it's not a bug. It's a deliberate feature

Huh? You won't be able to change names in the future? Oh God, I'll have to stick to one name.

You can change your name to whatever you like .... but all just within the naming guidelines - no company or website names, no spaces, odd characters, etc, etc

You bh. I've only done it twice and one was to shorten the name.
