Can something please be done about the lack of moderation in insurance topics in SP&L. Every post seems to be turned into a personal rant about non-fault claims, or CIE or SORN, and this simply gets in the way of people attempting to help out with information. Many people, myself included, are just going to give up providing help.

Any useful advice would just get drowned out, so why bother ?

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Yet more people saying "we won't bother"...

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Given your own posting rules say...

Deliberately provoke arguments or continue arguments that have calmed down, or have had the thread closed.

Reignite inflammatory threads by creating new threads on the same or similar topics after threads covering a particular topic have been closed.

...maybe applying these to SP&L would be an idea ?

We get it, we got it last time, and the time before that. You don't like Insurance, or the way it works.

The posting rules are applied across the site, however the moderators can't read each and every post.

If there are posts that you feel require moderation, please use the "Report" option in the top left of a post to bring it to the attention of the moderators.

Difficult

Noger's advice is invaluable
The problem is there some other insurance bods who state what should happen as if it always happens (it doesnt) and some posters who've been on the wrong end of what doesnt happen who assume it occurs every time.

In reality we need to know both - what should happen and the pitfalls that have really happened, so we can avoid them.

The advice is lost in the bun fight

Insurance threads can be a headache, tend to avoid the long winded ones now as they simply take up too much time.
Noger I have no idea how you have so much patience when dealing with some threads.

Yes, hence my posting here. It would be unfair to single out particular posts (although I gave two as examples), this isn't one person, it is more of a trend.

What to do ? Don't want to stifle debate, but when most insurance threads descend into AMCs vs Insurers or Non Fault or CIE, it doesn't help the forum.

Thoughts ?

Click report, it's anonymous.
There is no other way, the mods are volunteers and simply can't babysit a forum, it's up to users to highlight issues for the mods to look at.

There's no requirement that our beloved insurance experts answer every post (their posts are appreciated however). There is a real risk that SPL simply becomes an "ask the experts" area where you can't post your views unless you are a policeman, lawyer or insurance company.

Use the report button is the answer!

... policeman ...
They don't hangout on S,P&L anymore due to all the abuse, anti-BiB sentiment, and alledged expertise amongst some posters.

And I don't blame them to be honest.

OK, I thought a "guys can we try to keep on topic" post may help, but you chaps are the experts smile

Agreed, but it isn't swinging that way at the moment, quite the opposite in fact. And the issue (rather than risk) is that you don't get *any* "expert" views or that they are drowned out by off topic opinion.

Up to you. I quite enjoy helping, but it is getting to be pretty difficult. PH is lucky to have people like Zollar (and co) who actually work (rather than just faff about, like me!) at large insurers, and help out. Shame to lose that. We put up with a fair amount of abuse.

I can see what youre saying, there's a third group (at least)
http://pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&amp...
As well as those who know the industry line or the law, and those who had experience and the best thing to do or avoid, the third group proposes what to do from I'm not sure what background - in that thread getting hold of some 'witnesses'. Whatever that might mean, is it useful or relevant in SP&L?
Unless to show that can happen too
ok maybe it is useful smile

And there are those who think they know everything and dish out dodgy advice.

Which is a shame as the real experts were driven away mad

The question as to what is off topic is subjective. If an OP asks a questions and someone suggests an answer that is disagreed with, then the dicussion will cover the pro's and cons of the suggestion. To my mind that is on topic, and when illustrated with examples remains relevant.

IMO it goes ff topic when people start to throw insults or the discussion is not related to the OP or responses to the OP. This includes non mods telling people that they shouldn't be posting. That is as far of topic as anything.

Sometimes the broader discussions can add a dimension to an OP's problem tha hadn't previously been seen and can change ones opinion of how things actually work. In many cases including some of the threads highlighted here taht has occurred and for me and possibly others is valuable.

The SP&L forum covers sensitive areas and people will say what they think.

If "Experts" don't want to be exposed to a wider discussion then maybe we do need an "Ask the expert Section".

I have given advice on property law and development to many a PH'er in the forums and to those who PM me, but I also enjoy and take interest in the ranging of the discussion.

I don't disagree. Just asking for a bit of balance to be restored, that is all.

I read a few more threads from SPL over the last few days and I have to agree with you regarding many of the posts. I was surprised how personal some of them were with accusations of agendas and the like and I would be put off replying if I were an expert.

As above there's nothing wrong (in my opinion) with "I disagree with you because of XYZ", stating a bad experience with an insurer etc - and it would be bad to lose this. However "You're biased and don't know what you're talking about, idiot" doesn't help anyone.

I tend just to stop reading the thread, but I will try and use the button more in future to help highlight such posts.
