Valuation questions...

Just out of curiosity why are valuation threads banned?
If someone had, for example, a rare car part or a handbook I'd have thought PH would be an ideal place to start asking about it? Owner's clubs can be a little sniffy, not to mention the rigmarole of signing up and there is a wealth of knowledge on here, seems a shame not to be able to utilise that.

The relevant posting rule is 17c which says that "Valuation/what's it worth threads in any shape or form, regardless of item." are not permitted.
I understand the thinking behind this rule to be that many such threads are actually For Sale ads in disguise.
This, essentially. They're generally seen as a way to attempt to bypass using the classifieds to sell a car in the forums.I understand the thinking behind this rule to be that many such threads are actually For Sale ads in disguise.
Ok I can see that - I can see that with every day items like a VW Golf this circumventing w/could be an issue - however if you're trying to ascertain how much an original workshop manual for a Flux Capacitor should be offered for surely that's specialist enough that making use of the brains-trust on here would be justified? However would it be possible for there to be an anonymiser / mod to post question since there is much where an expert view would be very handy?
The other thing is that certain members are entitled to free adverts anyway so nothing would be lost?

Posters can and do circumvent the rules anyway by suggesting they are thinking of selling an item or car in general discussion without asking for a valuation and often get a response re said item in terms of a request for details by pm.
A certain M5 has been constantly revealed during discussion as going up for sale and being taken off sale again over the last year
I am sure many a car has been sold this way over the years without any intervention.
I have also seen valuation discussions on the AM / Porsche / Supercar forum which go unchallenged so maybe it depends on how far up the social ladder you are
As irocfan says anybody who joined before a certain date qualifies for free adverts anyway so what is the harm resulting from those posters asking the question. That can easily be policed.
