I can see that the quote button is a great help to many, but I'm finding that as it's so easy to quote a whole post, in some threads the nested quotes are so deep that I've given up trying to read the thread.

I'm afraid that I don't have an answer other than making it slightly more difficult to quote or limiting the quote to the last 2 levels (could be fun trying to code that, best of luck) as there's rarely a comment that refers back further.

Agreed, this is an area that could do with improvement. It would be good if it was easier to split quoted text to insert comments, and automagically delete/shrink/elide quotes nested past some level (2?). And pretty please can we have a wysiwyg editor? It seems odd that we're still typing in mark-up, didn't that cr@p go out with nroff?

Don't overdo the limit though (maybe 9 would make sense).

As I've said before, there are many occasions where posts don't make sense as they have no context.
