I think it's a bit unfair in this case as the owner was unaware he tells me.Car was written off before his ownership, so could be the case.
I'd like to see the fact it has been written off in the advert but not drag him thru a thread as he might be genuinely unaware.

I have emailed the seller, and I'm waiting for a response. But for the time being I should make a point of policy clear here, just so everybody knows where we're at.
We don't have a cast-iron rule about declaring write-offs et al in classified ads. We do put an HPI check button on every advert, and this is your best bet for safety. I know it costs money to do, but look at it this way - a seller declaring 'Cat C' etc on their advert is not sufficient grounds to omit an HPI check.
Think about it. If you had a stolen car or one listed as scrapped and you wanted to sell it on, you wouldn't want people HPI checking it and learning the truth. So you write 'Cat D' or whatever into the advert, and there you go - nobody bothers to HPI check as they feel you've been honest from the start. This can cover a multitude of sins, and serves to underline the point. If you are serious about buying a particular car, always get an HPI check.
This particular case also highlights another reason to do so: some owners are not aware of their vehicles history. Build quality and reliability are improving and cars aare lasting longer, and repair technology is advancing too - all of this means older cars are becoming more common and have longer histories, and in many cases are less liable to being written-off in the first place. There are many cars on the used market with Cat-Cs and Ds in their histories, and owners often don't check before buying and hence resell the cars years later with no knowledge of the history they are passing on.
I've asked the seller to declare it in the advert this time, because its clearly causing controversy and making people unhappy. But as a general point, always do your own HPI check even if the seller appears to be being honest.
