Going by other websites policies, discussing how to bypass adverts is a no-no - which I can understand.

For browsing security, I use a Firefox add-on called NoScript. It stops javascript from executing on any site that you don't allow. It has many other handy features, but most of all will prevent malicious websites from doing harm to your computer.

We prefer it if you don't use adblock or similar, as the adverts are what pay for the running of the forums, but obviously we can't stop you.

I've asked for the Totally Money advert to be removed again, so it should be safe to turn the adverts back on soon (We do have a rather fetching PetrolHead Nirvana one running at the moment).

In the days of Ted, and decent targetted advertising, I didn't block them - as they were actually relevant, and I used to click on some - which I never do on any other site.

When Haymarket made the switch to generic web adverts (with a slight motoring bias) then it was the time for them to go off again.

That's something I've said many times but I've never been given an acknowledgement or explanation that they were making more money with the new anyone who pays plays way or what the reason was.

The problem is that the big forums now generate so many hits that the smaller (more relevant) businesses cannot afford to cover them effectively. This means that they normally choose to target our marque specific forums when they advertise with us now, hence the greater number of targeted adverts in these areas.

Do many people actually click on the generic ads from say GG or P&P? I can't imagine it, but maybe I think of things differently!

So if I click on an advert - say just in a right-click open in new tab kind of way - does this generate revenue for PH from the advertiser? In which case I'm suddenly seeing the annoying ad in a whole new redistribution-of-wealth way...

There was no wish generally to block adverts from these or any other of PH's clients; one appreciates that this is not a philanthropy.
The particular ad in question was downright obnoxious, and actually did discourage one from spending time on any page that carried it. As I wrote in the OP, besides giving some of us headaches, the more important problem would have been if it affected someone who suffers from epilepsy.
You may wish to advise Totally Money to get a new advertising manager. On recent evidence, the present one is totally crap.
