What to do with Trolls?

There are a number of PH posters I'd classify as Trolls.

Would it be possible to introduce a block by username so we don't have to suffer their nonsense?

Perhaps there are other options?

Who do you suspect are trolls? (just out of curiosity not trying to be rude ),
I think a troll every now and then is good for the PH digestive system but too many at the same time can make the place Ill.

Yes their is. Ignore them. Don't reply to them. You'll always get these types

Ignoring them is by far the best thing to do .... it's sometimes hard not to bite though.

I agree with the ignore thing, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to get rid of them? Or at least not have to wade through irrelevant posts?

The problem is that many other people reply, turning a serious discussion into a stupid one.

Perhaps we could have a system where they're tolerated in the lounge, but not in other areas?

Life's like that sometimes. Depending on mood I'll bite but typically I don't find it difficult to count to ten and breathe.
I think it's CTF who have a 'block/hide user' option. I tried it on one or two but when someone does bite the thread quickly becomes disjointed from my POV so I ended up unblocking the person so I could see what the fuss was about. But that's me.

stopping them is impossible really. a free public fourm you'll always have the trolls.

This is my experience of hide user buttons too, which is why we don't want to add one to PH.

Plus you'll still see their posts whenever someone quotes them anyway, so they are rather ineffective.

Instead, the best option is to report them to the mods. We might not take action the first time, but if someone is generating a regular stream of reports then we will take notice and deal with it.

one of the downsides of reporting to the mods is that the person who is deemed to be a troll by one person might have an entirely different view point and consider the other person to be the troll, yet both are equally valid

Reporting to the mods doesn't do any harm, it let's us keep tabs on what is going on and tells us what your opinion is.

Whether action is taken will then be a decision the mods will make, it's not an automatic thing and people won't be getting banned just for having an argument.

Apparently some lady who worked in Fashion - posted in General Gassing about 20 minutes ago.

It was removed about 5-10 minutes ago by a mod.

They can be annoying but, like germs, a few are good for your general health, too many though and it can kill you.

Put them on the top of your pencil
