When will the search facility be back

Im sick of going through pages and pages to find a topic i want to read when is it coming back, Unless some one can tell me when dexter season 5 will be shown in america and uk

I mean the "Google Search" box on the PH search page. It uses Google to search just the PistonHeads forums and gives better results than the old search ever managed.

Google is blocked but PH isn't? What are you supposed to use to search the internet?

sorry but relying on a google search isnt really the way forward

it may well get results but a dedicated search on the forum will get them better

No, but it's better than the old PH search. It covers the current day and things older than 6 months for starters. It's also fast, normally accurate and can even be targeted to a specific forum using the tip in the sticky at the top of Website Feedback.

What are it's failings in your eyes?

that you have to follow a tip in a sticky on how to search. Google might be good at searches but if your userbase has to follow instructions hidden inside a sticky thread, when the old search used to do its job, then it has failed on the usability front. Yes google searches but well, it is summed up in this old anti-mac video:

I agree it doesn't have such a nice interface, but don't worry, it isn't a permanent solution, Just a very effective stand in. However a significant number of people refuse to even try it when it is actually surprisingly good for most queries (IMHO)

How about a link on the search page to the thread with the tips in it? I would wager the majority of users never venture into Website Feedback.

With due respect (I've seen you in mod action tonight ) no, it doesn't. Tried a search using the Google option earlier this evening and - with only one exception - it returned results from 2+ years ago. And it was a topic I know has been discussed far more recently.

Google is pants. We want PH search!

It does for the OP's question though!

As I've said already, it is only a stopgap, but it's definitely better than the PH Search was. In it's final days the PH search was only able to look at topics between about 6 months old and 24 hours old, which was far from ideal when we have data going back nearly 10 years and people shouting "Repost" on popular topics of the day.

It is firmly on the dev list though and should be back (in greatly improved form) in the near future.
