Phonesafe problem?
Discussion
Hi guys,
I have a classified ad running at the momentand a potential buyer has emailed me saying the number generated by phonesafe is directing to a number which isn't mine.
Is it a common/fixable problem, as obviously there is someone getting strange phonecalls and I am possibly losing potential buyers.
Thank You

I today tried phoning someone regarding a bike he has advertised, only to get through to the speaking clock. I know I am not the first person this has happened to. Whats going on?
Phonesafe numbers get changed to point to the speaking clock when they expire, but they shouldn't ever expire whilst the advert is still live.If you post the reference number then I will make sure a new one is assigned.
Turn off PhoneSafe. It costs 50p per minute plus a 50p set-up charge from a BT landline. I won't call PhoneSafe numbers when I'm looking for a car, I'll email instead asking for a normal number or for the seller to call me. Last time I was looking for one, the seller returned my call too late and I had already purchased another.

The seller has the option whether or not to use phonesafe, it is very handy from the point of view of blocking canvassers and scammers, and also for preventing your phone number ending up all over google etc.It also doesn't cost 50ppm, the (BT Landline) charges are as follows:
Day: 37.5p
Evening: 25.0p
Weekend: 12.5p
If the ad has expired then why not make the ad dissappear ? That will mean we do not pay for the service and listen to the speaking clock when we are going to get stung for call charges ?
Do we know the system works well anyway ? Anybody validating it ? Just phoned another number and all I could hear was my own echo which cost me 37.5p per minute !!

It is the phonesafe number which has expired, not the advert. The phonesafe number should always last longer than the advert but unfortunately there is a bug where occasionally if the advert has been relisted several times without being generated a new number then it will outlast the phonesafe number.Do we know the system works well anyway ? The is optional, generally works well and we get few complaints about it, but now that we have over 100k adverts on the site it only takes a tiny failure rate to generate quite a few errors.

Ah, that would explain my original problem then as the ad was relisted 2 or 3 times.Forums | Website Feedback | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
