it's the noise.... sudden and highish pitch.
enough to disturb anyone else in the same room and enough of a delay that it only sounds after i have got a few posts down a thread so it takes a few clicks to get back up to the top and silence it. It has been around a few weeks but finally got on my nerves enough this morning.
I am in france and I think it is a french advert if that helps track it down. Will force myself to read it next time and see who it is for.

We have several ways to serve ads and thus one of them is to target ads to visitors from outside UK. As we have so many page impressions we have to backfill (thus show ads from a pool of suppliers who are willing to serve their ads across multiple sites).
Unfortunately we cannot vet every single one of these adverts, but we do have a strict rule that no ads can play noise without being activated by the user.
We come down hard on anyone who breaks this rule, as far as banning whole ad networks for being cheeky (especially putting noise ads up at the start of the weekend when they think noone can react till Monday). So if you spot it again we are very keen to know who it is.
