Postcode required for nationwide classifieds search

It’s mildly annoying having to input a postcode when doing a nationwide search - why does my postcode matter?

Can postcode be made optional for nationwide searches?

I’d imagine it is so you can still sort the results by distance, and so that you can still see how far a result is from your location.
