I occasionally see topics with a purple tag on the header- just curious what does it denote?

Think it indicates your bookmarked topics. It’s that or the ones you’re watching / have contributed to, I forget which.

I used to think that but I've not even opened the ones indicated - much less bookmarked them... weird

Mine sometimes does that - I think it gets me confused with someone else from time to time, not sure why.
