On reading some of the threads on here one could get the wrong impression, that Le Mans this year was the worst ever - with more soakings, more bad driving, more theiving and more speeding fines.

Quite frankly I really don't think it was - I think it was the same as when I first went 7 years ago.

There have ALWAYS been people with water pistols ready to soak you, always people spinning their wheels, always been thefts and always been the rossers out to make some speeding cash.

Each year one can find stories of an accident / a huge speeding fine / someone getting soaked when they didn't want to / someone playing music too loud on Saturday night / someone having their wallet stolen / some nasty story. Seems to me that forums such as these give people a platform to voice their bad experiences more loudly than ever before so it gives the wrong impression.

However, if 250,000 people go again next year, and more importantly ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT, it can't all be that bad.

Le Mans is about heat, cars, beer, bbqs, water pistols, stupidity, etc - it's not just PHers, it's not just Brits - it's "Le Mans". I suspect the percentage of people who go that are *really* into the race is low - the rest enjoy the "crappyness" of it all.

Personally I'm looking forward to next year

Only the second year for us and even better than last year. It's about everything for us. The trip up and back with all the brits - mostly waving and generally being friendly and courteous to each other (unheard of in the UK). Camping in the raging heat, being with friends, making new friends, pyro in the campsite, doughnuts in an empty patch on the Sunday night, oh and watching some fast cars.

Didn't see as much of the race as I wanted to this year - about 4 hours, and watched the start and end in Speed chills

Yes there are some tw*ts but they are in the minority so why can't the rest of us have a bit of fun

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. There do seem to be a
lot of miserable whingers on here. I suspect that some of these are
people who are getting a little old for the event and can't enjoy
themselves as much as they used to. These people probably also have
erectile disfunction and should consider a weekend of morris dancing
instead to help improve their stamina.

Totally agree , Our group had a totally wicked time, and We had two 'newbies' and now they are hooked !

Even a friendly couple in our campsite who had not been for 10 years, brought their 9 year old ( along with a late 80's 911) loved it & said they'll be back next year...roll on 2007!

It's quite easy to do Le Mans "GOM" style and still enjoy it.

If you don't like all the supersoakers, burnouts and fireworks then just give them a miss - it's a big enough event for you to spend the whole weekend there without coming into contact with anything you don't enjoy.

Oh, I forgot to add... this event doesn't "belong" to anyone.

Someone like me who wants to go for the social / camping / getting out of London / meeting up with friends / being in the sun side of things rather than the race side of things has just as much right to be there.

I think everyone would agree with you there, and indeed have sympathy with those on the receiving end. But how many examples of that were there? I suspect a very small number.

Not much TBH. Water bombs yes (launched from way back and lucky if 1 in 5 hit anything at all) and one of our party in a Chim had his gorgeous bikini clad g/f with him who got an absolute soaking (water pistols and one water bomb that found its mark). But then this was outside MB/Bleu (I think thats the one) and not the madness at Houx. Still mad enough to be funny, not stupid enough to be annoying.

Dousing the French girl on the bike was bang out of order though.

Couldn't have said it better myself! We had a great time and go for exactly the same reasons you outline above, in fact I'd be surprised if I spent more than an hour watching the actual race, but I would definitely go again!!

Incidentally Pikey, looking at your photo's where was that hotel you stopped at on the way home, looked really nice. I'm taking the Chim over in August and wouldn't mind locating a few hotels like that.

Cheers

Matt

Finally, a thread about how good Le Mans was.
It was my second and I fookin loved it. Went down in a exotic convony including both a Fiesta AND a Peugeot (which made a change from the Noble the year before (which was driven very carefully might I add : P) and we seemed to be overtaking Lambo's, Astons, Porches, etc. and we weren't travelling at excessive speeds either, so i'd say all the driving I saw was very sedate and courteous.
As apposed to the gooning, I guess I was in the right place as i didnt see any dickheads, beer/piss throwers or nething. A couple of kids spraying waterpistols into your car near Bleu but kids will be kids. And a load of people having fun in their cars with like minded people watching in admiration of their car or driving.
The beer, bar-b-ques, racing, go-karting and everything else was also brilliant and I had a right laugh even in Bleu Nord which is rated very low with the Le Mans veterans.
I say bring on Le Mans 07. I can't wait.

I'd also like to thank the ACO and the Gender arms (french police people) for making it such a challenge to get to the Mulsanne straight this year. It took 2.5 hours in the dead of night of ducking and diving and was well worth getting ripped to shreads by a ditch full of thorns.
