Hello, in process of wanting (not really needing) an i4 - not planning on using for long trips because have diesel that can do that.

Approved used plan - 3ish years old and from dealer just because of the 12 month warranty rather than car supermarket.

Driven both - enjoy both although extra power in m50 is fun. I know I will always be a bit miffed driving a 40 but also know might be best proposition overall.

Basically can get either for similar money but 40 I can get 90% of spec and colour and low mileage but m50 bigger compromise on those things.

Help!

Sounds like you want the M50 so just get it, as you say it's not a needed car you want one so buy the one you WANT the most.

Nordboy - you are probably spending as much time as I am on the approved used site!

There are some useful comments from owners in the PH i4 buyers guide on the relative merits of both, if you’ve not read it.

I maybe won't go approved used, there seems to be many others for sale. As with most things, it'll come down to what I can afford, the AU are pushing my budget.

I'm not sure a 50 would be worth the extra for me either. I'm looking at a 100-130 a day commute so need max range rather than speed tbh. I'm currently working out the differences between sport and m sport etc

The i4 is a decent EV. Had you had a look at the ioniq 5n, 6n, M3P? The ioniqs have some excellent lease deals at the moment, eg £570ish 1+23 8000 miles for a 5n, far more driver focused than the beemer and spacious inside. I suspect you'll lose near £500 a month on a 2 year old m50, and be on the hook for previous owners enjoyment of tyres and bmws piss poor warranty.

Colleague next to me just went through the same decision process.

He ultimately decided to buy a high spec 40 model versus the M50, more range, equal toys and "lighter" handling

I ran an M50 for a year. I think the 40 is probably the better car. It’s lighter and more efficient, the M50 could never escape just how heavy it was.

Either one is a very good car.

I went well specced 40 over the M50, purely down to range. Not a massive difference but 50/60 miles was worth more than the performance to me.

40 is about 150kg lighter and supposed to handle better.

I looked at an M50 but these seemed far better value…
