I have not long owned my M4 competition, but want to release some cash from it and still have something fun and ideally a manual.

My car is a 2020 with less than 50,000 miles and I hope to get £10k back or more plus a car

These are on my shortlist

Golf gti performance 7.5 (already had an r)
BMW 435i manual (older but looks very similar)
Audi s3 manual from a main dealer
Megane 280

Or maybe a 320d g80 diesel with a manual.

The only things options I want are car play, heated seats and ideally a decent sound system

Needs decent space for two kids in the back.

Thanks for any other ideas

I have the same car as you albeit mine is slightly older and with around 65k on the clock.
I've considered it a few times because i've owned mine 2 years now. but I keep coming back to nothing else in budget is as good overall (IMO).

From your list personally I don't think I could go to a non M BMW, I think it would be too similar but just not as good and everytime I saw an M4 or M3 I would regret not having one and driving something lower in the range instead.

The Golf GTI and the Megane 280 are both cars i've looked at as alternatives. As a drivers car I prefer the Megane but I found the interior and the infotainment to feel quite poor which is a massive shame, I'd love to buy one as a second car though. The Golf GTI is probably the best all round car out of the group, I do prefer them to the Golf R personally.

The only other one i would throw into the mix is the Civic Type R, FK8 may not release the cash you are wanting but an FK2 would be a good alternative.

Anything but the S3. Hateful sacks of st. I had the manual and the gearbox is toss, it sounds crap and, while it grips and sticks well, it understeered as per the Audi stereotype and the steering was awful. They also have a terrible image, but it depends where you are in the country and whether you fit the image, I suppose.

They do cover ground very quickly, though, but there’s no joy in it.

I like the Type R suggestion. I’d probably add the Jaguar XE 3.0 V6S onto the list, or maybe something weird like a VW Arteon R or a Hyundai I30N.

The 435i manual isn't a bad shout for me, but I wouldn't be going anywhere near a 320d after the M4 though.

I made that mistake when I swapped the E53 X5 4.8iS for the E61 520d Touring, and the contrast is just too big/disappointing I think.

Sold my M2 to free up cash due to two kids, house move and investment.

Went a Tesla Model 3.

Be significantly faster than all the cars on your list, cheaper to run, handles better than all accept the Megane, better sound system, way more practical in the back.

Only negative is you need to have a driveway to charge it and obviously not a manual.

Thanks some great shouts. My wife is okay with any car I get accept a type r !

If I do change it has to be a manual, I used an electric car for a while and hated it,

This is likely to be only for 18 months or so.

The 320d would be the newer shape so would have better interior etc

Thanks again

The s3 turned out to be sold via Audi but not approved as 8 years old, so I left that.

I was sorely tempted by a red 3 door R, but they would only take £200 off the list price.

In the end I went for a 2019 performance gti in the lovely dark metallic blue.

All being well the m4 goes on Monday and I collect the Gti then too.

Will be interested to see how you feel about the GTI in a few weeks and months, as I said above it's a move I considered making but felt I would regret it so kept the M4 but I will be interested to see your view on it when you have had it a while

Yes, it is hopefully only for a year or two.

The m4 is great and get loads of positive comments, but in a way needs to driven pretty fast, I bet it is fun on a track which I am not doing anytime soon
