Selling on Market place, any one done it?

Hi all, have just put my car on marketplace but I m a bit wary about replies I ve had so far. No soon as the ad went on I ve had quite a few responses ( within minutes). I m just a bit sceptical about these quick replies, has anyone sold on there before or is there anything I should be aware of before giving out any further details. Hope I m not just paranoid as I ve never sold or a car on there before. Cheers in advance for any advice .

Be aware of people wanting to pay more for the car, have it collected, mention anything to do with escrow or titles.
When they turn up make sure there aren't 99 of them all wanting to crowd around the car to distract you and put oil in the coolant/up the exhaust. Insist if there are a load of them that 2 can inspect it, but the rest can stay in their car.

It's a nightmare, put an Avensis on for £600. Inundated with messages asking things like what's the lowest price. Ones you do actually engage with don't have any intention to come and look at the car.
My approach now is Autotrader, using a 3.99 a month Lebara SIM I can take out of the second SIM slot as soon as the sale is concluded.

Based on previous experience I’d have drafted a couple of paragraphs about the car ready to send to anyone who asks for ‘more info.’ If they’re willing to speak on the phone then even better.
Once that’s filtered out 90% of the enquiries then I wouldn’t actually discuss price/condition any further unless they commit to coming to view.
Basically give them all the info they’d need to decide whether it’s worth them coming to look at it, then take it from there if and when they arrive.

I have used MP and it is fine. Of Course, you will get quite a few stupid offers or daft questions. I don't mind answering a few questions, but I don't fully engage unless it is someone clearly interested, so , keen to come and view in person, trying to arrange a suitable meeting time etc, only then would I share a location and would generally meet somewhere close to my home like a car part. If they are no good, at least they don't know your address.
Alternatively, I have also used Motorway, its an online auction site and as I got more than I was expecting without the hassle of tyre kickers. It's worth looking as my car sold on there for more than the estimate.

Cheap cars are always a nightmare, regardless of platform imho.AT can be OK as a lot of people don't even bother with it for cheap stuff these days (as it's a king's ransom)
Motorway is pretty good provided the car is in alright condition and no mechanical faults etc, you'll get more than WBAC.
FB Marketplace can be okay you may just have to put up with a few idiots and a few scammers, soon as they start mentioning paypal deposits and stuff just ignore them. I listed and got a couple of dealers offering which was alright.

Many thanks for the replies so far. I must admit, having not done this too often, it does seem a scary process and my ‘ spider senses’ are tingling each time I get another message. Latest one wants the mot details and a cv. Firstly, the mot history ( done yesterday so 12 & 1/2 months) is readily available on the gov. Site but asssuming he means a vehicle condition report and not a curriculum vitae (VCR), then surly that’s upto the purchaser to get ( and pay for) for their due diligence when purchasing. There is no way I’m doing it for them not to turn up. I’ll give it a week to see how it goes then maybe go AT or on here as that’s where I bought it 10 years ago off a fellow PH’er. Wish me luck, cheers 🤞

I would just send a link to the Gov MOT website and tell them they are free to arrange their own inspection if they wish to do so at your convenience when viewing the car in person. Most will just ghost you after that, but if not, you may have a genuine customer...possibly...Recently sold a car on facebook and got a lot more ad views than ebay or gumtree. Took a couple months to sell though because a lot of initial interest were traders with lowball offers or just general chancers looking for a couple grand off.
What amused me was almost every morning I would find messages from someone enquiring late at night and 95% of them I never heard back from. Guess many like to start dreaming even before going to sleep.

I sold my old Mk4 GTi via Marketplace last year, like others have said expect a load of chancers, wasters, swop it for an xBox & small time traders. I had one guy who was a bit too enthusiastic & I thought he's building it up in his head to be something much better than what it is, so it could've ended in disappointment for him. Luckily a small time trader came the same day, made a cheeky offer (still more than I would've got for scrap), so I accepted it & it worked out well for both of us.

Messaged me a few days later saying he could not make it back and did not mention the deposit so i had a free tank of fuel on him.

One of the more recent scams are those requesting you pay for an inspection report, hoping you will do so to make the car more saleable, or they will agree to buy the car from you at full price if you do so. But the website they use looks real, but there is no inspection report. It's just the inspection report scammers getting you to pay them free money for imaginary reports.
Yes, that’s what he wanted me to do,. Sent a link to a car report site and insisted that I pay for the report. I told him that if you buy a house it’s the buyer who pays for searches and surveys , not the seller. Not heard much back after !Sold 2 of my cars in the last 6 weeks through FB marketplace. Agree with alot written on here - you'll get several time wasters and those offering pennies but my buyers both came through Marketplace rather than Gumtree or AT!
Usually easy to weed out the numpties. My advice is dont put yourself out - dont change plans or go out your way to accommodate potential viewers. That way you dont get pi££ed off when people dont turn up or arrive super late.
