Not even certain it was a kit car, but certainly something I didn't recognise.
Two door hatchback, wedge shape reminiscent of a 70s TVR but smaller, Fiesta sized even. Very well proportioned for a kit car if that's what it was.

That sounds close, though I think the rear profile was a bit different.

That rules out the Hensen M30, then, at least!

there it is, Wedge=check, Hatch = check, humor = check laugh

the picture says >>The Citicar was America’s best-selling EV since 1945 until Tesla Model S came along<<<

just kidding and my head hurts what car you saw.
Was the hatch a high one or low like a TVR wedge, was it a steal body or a GRP plastic?

or a Ferrari Rainbow (I forgot about this one)

or something as ugly as this :-)

It wasn't ugly or futuristic at all. I only think it was a kit car because I'd never seen one like it before, it could have been a mass produced small Ford from a parallel universe.

That would make it a Quantum 2+2:

'Very well proportioned' is stretching it a bit, mind.

In which case the Ginetta G26 may be a possibility:

Fester doors again, but a bit longer than the Ford.
