Pre MOT MOT results
Discussion
Hiya chaps and chapettes,
Put my M in for it's preMOT MOT this weekend and I have to say that although it failed, I'm pretty pleased with the results as only minor 'fix-its' are required.
The main problem that the car had was dodgey electrics. These were:
Bad earth to the back lights which made the brake light flash with the indicators.
Horn failed to work
Hazards didnt work. (Are hazards a requirement on a '76 car?)
I have bought a new loom and plan on installing this before the MOT runs out in July so that sorts the electrics out nicely.
The O/S track rod end needs replacing. (Anyone know of a direct replacement or alternative type that fits?)
The o/s rear indicator lense was cracked and advised to be replaced. (anyone got a spare?)
The numberplate letters were spaced wrong. (TWN1H opposed to TWN 1H)
and the drivers seatbelt was frayed and didnt recoil. (Found replacements in a 1981 Mini City that fit the Floor clips)
Sorry for my ramblings but if anyone has any info on the Hazards and the Track rod end, i'd appreciate a posting!
Cheers
Andy Clayton

Hi Andy,
Adrian will be able to sort you out with the track rod ends no problem, I think he keeps them in stock. A good opportunity to get the alloy mounting brackets too perhaps?
Not too sure on the indicator lens - are they the same shape as on mine?
Cheers,
Tony
p.s. Loom replacement, by July? Which year?!

Hi Andy,
Adrian Venn, Steve Reid or David Gerald may be able to help with the rear lens. The later type that don't wrap round are quite difficult to find and consequently expensive - I've seen them at around £100! They are ex Scimitar and Aston Martin. You could try a Scimitar dealer.
Earlier ones are TR6 I think - but could be wrong.
Good luck!

Thr Track Rod End is Triumph TR6/2000
The rear indicator lens, depends on type, but most cars had a lucas unit fitted only to TVRs, Scimitars and Aston Martins (if its one of the side repeaters, they are export MGB, Jaguar). Any of the TVR specialists should be able to help here, Steve Reid, Adrian Venn, DG, etc. Complete light units are expensive and very rare (the last two I had, as spares for my Taimar) I sold for £110 each a couple of years ago.
Hazard Lights, should be simple fix if you're replacing the loom, probably the lucas hazard flasher unit! I also didn't think thay had to work on a pre80 car, but they may be rules about the switch being fitted therefore they should work.
Hope that helps

BTW Pietro is right, early cars had a TR6 unit

If there is a hazard switch fitted, then the lights should work. Remove it or tape over it (so it doesn't say 'hazard' or have the triangle showing) and you'll be ok.
I have a couple of spare rear indicator lenses you can have (email me via my profile if you want one) but if it's an 'advise' rather than a 'fail' you need not worry.

Cheers BigT! Forgot about AV!!
Already have the alloy mounts (fitted by previous owner) :OP
I have the TR6 rear lights (yours are Lucas aren't they?)
The loom is coming along nicely (Mini loom project part 1) Neatly bound in fresh tape and waiting to have the wires for the front lights and starter motor extended to reach. I have nearly finished the new instrument loom and hope to start swapping them over in a couple of weeks.

The hazard switch had been removed by the previous owner (Simon Sparrow from the Berkshire TVRcc) so I'm assuming that it doesn't need them!?!? I will been putting them in as the Mini loom has them already included so shouldn't be too much extra work to refit the switch.
Should anyone be wondering, I'm going to use the Triumph/Mini indicator and washer stalks to have wipers, washers and horn on the stalks.
Got a pair of Triumph stalks on Ebay for £7.50. BARGAIN!

Just remember when rewiring that it's absolutely essential to maintain the "mystery factor" for future owners by rewiring the entire car using only white wires.
It is important to follow this policy throughout, as it makes it really easy to work out what everything does when something goes wrong, especially if you don't label any of them...
To leave a few semi-wired switches dangling behind the dash with no obvious purpose also adds an air of suspense.

Methinks I sense some bitterness creeping in here Mawds

Nice Vixen by the way
