Fuel Tank problems

Anyone got any advice on fuel tank repairs - my 1972 1600M appears to have corroded on the underside and although there is no real sign of fuel flooding out, I am getting strong fuel smells especially when accelerating - all pipes and hoses are OK - left a couple of sponges wedged under the tank last night and although not wet this morning they do stink of fuel. I don't really want to replace if I can help it as I have just got the rear window to seal after months of trying and according to Adrian Venn I think I may have a Vixen tank in there which I may not get out without removing the rear screen.

The 12 gallon M-series tank will just come out through the car,I've done it with my early 1600M by taking a seat out-awkward but better than trying to reseal a rear screen.Can't say whether its possible with a 15 gallon vixen tank though.Sounds like you need a new tank,make sure the tank straps are secure before refitting,mine was loose the fibreglass rubbed a hole in the seam of my tank where it was moving.
Cheers, looks like I will be investing in a tank then, how can I tell if I have the Vixen or M tank ? is it just physical size or are there different shapes, also tank straps are missing - I can see they have been snapped off from the mouldings on the body, the current tank is held in by a made up wooden frame attached to the original wood which is moulded into body, complimented by sponge packers which is probably the cause of the rot, given the rear screen leak. What should a standard M tank look like ??
If you can wait until the w/e (I've got really full days until then), I'll get the old girl out and take a pic of a vixen tank.
Mine leaked where the breather pipe met the tank itself - got a real shock to come back to the car, parked in the middle of Harrogate, with a crowd of firemen around it - I'd parked on a road with quite a sharp camber, and filled the tank full for the drive home. Of course, half of it just ran out of the hole, and onto the pavement.
If you want a) a new tank made (aluminium) at a reasonable price
and (b) a nice run out to pick it up (
), then you could do worse than the Boggs near Malton - but depends which bit of T&W you're in, 'cause that could be quite a trek.
Oh, and (c) they'll make your car go like stink as well...
