Afternoon all

May friend is looking for a trackday / hillclimb toy.
He's thinking something like an old F2000/f3000 car or Formula Ford, OR some sort of old-school cigar shaped sort of thing... (old F1 would be WAY out of budget)

Not looking to spend a fortune, will consider a do-er-up-er.

Where is best to look for these sort of things for sale? are there any specific forums / boards that people who have / race / sell these hang out?

This sort of thing?

No good for trackdays though as openwheel cars are generally not allowed. Hillclimbs should be ok I'd think.

oooh! Now that's what I was looking for :-)

At a stretch I suppose he could fit some sort of tyre-hugger wheel arches to pass for track day regs.... (?)

Not really. I'm not an expert, but I believe it's the basic nature of the car that isn't allowed.

There's a reason lotus 7 clones are so popular.

Although if he does an ARDS he could use it on test days.

If you are buying a project buy a car that is complete because the engines and gearboxes can often be worth quite a bit more than the car . You could do a lot worse than buy a Clubmans type car , Mallock etc.

Agreed, and they can be used on track days I think, as they are not open wheels. Cheap to run, too.

I know where there is one for sale. Not mine.

Yes I am seeing a lot advertised as just "rolling chassis" - I mean where on earth are we supposed to get an engine/box to fit (MOST OF) them?!

Theres a nice Lola F2000 for sale but has no engine...

Well of it's a mid engine single seater the gearbox is very likely to be a hewland type box.

An engine for a formula ford 2000 is based on a pinto engine which are still plentiful in scrapyards. or buy a complete unit from an engine builder.

race cars are actually extremely simple. They are designed to be worked on. parts are easy to change and as long as you have the money, the parts are all still available.
