Drivers who complain there is too much to do in the cockpit.
Discussion
Just wondering what the general consensus is? Personally I'm fed up with drivers moaning that there's too much to concentrate on, highlighted by Trulli & Ruben's views that DRS in Monaco is dangerous?!
Surely if you don't have the minerals &/or skill then don't use it and let the drivers with the talent shine through. Judgement and pushing the boundaries are what performing at this level is what it should be all about IMO!
I'm not saying I want to see crashes as such and definately don't wish the sport to be more dangerous, I'd just like to see drivers being punished for falling off the road and making mistakes. I'm certain the differing abilities would show and the drivers really could make the difference if there was more risk involved?
How many drivers would consider it okay to have an off if they knew it really would be the end of their race? I believe you'd see far more difference between the harder (when defending & overtaking), braver or quicker drivers.
Maybe I'm talking rubbish, what are your thoughts?
Cheers
Michael

I thought they were going to turn DRS off in Monaco because there are no straight bits to use it on safely. I'm not a fan of all the diff settings and engine modes, why does Schumacher's F1 car need a sport button (the magic paddle), its an F1 car!
This is puzzling me. Every F1 car has a "sport" button.During the race they limit fuel use, engine power (for reliability) and probably a host of other things too. The driver has a button (or paddle, or whatever) that instnatly changes the settings to peak power - maybe for overtaking another car, or for the requirement of a particularly quick lap. It's nothing new and it's nothing to shout about!?

No heard of this before TBH, thought once they did not really have to change gear the old fashioned way there was spare capacity to play with diffs / brake balance and the like from corner to corner. I think its the speed of the cars and how quick the corners come up that limits how much time they can play with stuff in the car, probably need to slow the cars down a bit or let the engineers make changes whilst the driver does the steering and braking. That would be interesting.:-)
It's because of the limited engine allowance for the season.
and no refueling.
Also diff/brake balance settings.
Perhaps taking some buttons off the steering wheel would generate better racing?
I'm not too keen on the limited engine rule from the FIA.
"But it's green" is just ridiculous.

I don't really hear many drivers saying there is "too much" to concentrate on - they certainly have a lot of flashing and beeping buttons and levers on the wheel though.........As a national level driver I think it's a pretty silly argument.
I'll whinge to the back teeth if I think a car or circuit is physically unsafe, but moaning about 'more things to do' is like proclaiming that a car that oversteers is dangerous because you've got rubbish car control.
If you've got the spare capacity to manipulate more controls then you have a talent that can be exploited.

Interesting post on Scarbsf1's twitter feed this morning as it happens - current Renault F1 steering wheel, with what appears to be a total of 8 paddles on the back of the wheel (two small blue ones in addition to the six carbon fibre ones):
I don't think the blatant safety risk caused by DRS in monaco tunnels is to do with buttons on the wheel...
The problem is pretty simple: If you don't use DRS through the tunnel, you'll not do very well. However, as seen early doors this year, DRS round a turn can be a little hairy, and you get the occasional off.
RB's worry is that IF you are full bore down there and have an off, the driver behind can't see you till he'd gone into you at full tilt. The guy behind him will struggle to stop, because he has to brake and turn. RB is worried that a big pile up could injure people - that isn't the same as moaning about an extra paddle.
I know I'll get eaten alive on PH for this, but IMO F1 is much "cooler" when noone goes to hospital. There is no guarantee that there will be a prang, just an increased chance of a prang - which isn't going to be offset by any additional overtaking, because it's Monaco.

2 are the clutch
2 are gears up/down
2 are diff settings
(don't know about the blue ones - could be DRS or KERS)

If it's not safe at Monaco then it's not safe at any circuit. Monaco is prepared to the same FIA safety standards as the rest.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's not. You'd never see another new Monaco-style circuit pop up on the calendar now - nearest to it is probably Singapore, and look at all that lovely run-off...
Monaco just has to be prepared to be as safe as possible within the confines of environment it is in.
Back on topic, if the DRS zone is to be in the tunnel, I think we could see problems this year - if you remember some of the accidents we've seen in there in the past where drivers have run off the racing line and understeered into the armco, that type of thing is going to be exacerbated by the increased tyre degradation (and therefore marbles) this year, which I would imagine could make for some brown overalls moments when overtaking on the turn with DRS open.
Just my 2p's worth. Personally, I'm happy for them to allow the use of DRS atthe driver's own discretion.

That would effectively negate it's use - because every driver will use it every time they don't need rear downforce.Forums | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
