The FIA’s Charlie Whiting has confirmed that there will be two DRS zones at each race – if the circuit layout allows it – starting from Montreal.

The two zones will have to be consecutive, as the wing will be activated at the same point.

In Montreal they will be the last straight and the pit straight.

Whiting said the software that allows the use of two zones first became available for Turkey, but it wasn’t yet proven.

Great.. so A overtakes B on the first one, then B overtakes A on the 2nd. Net gain: Nothing.

My understanding of the first poster's comments is that there is only one DRS detection zone so I assume that this would mean:

A overtakes B on the first on and because B still can't use drs A pulls away from B in the 2nd zone.

According to autosport there is only one activation zone. So car B passes car A on the back straight. Leads through the chicane onto the start finsh straight then, as they were behind at the one and only activation zone car B can open the DRS and pull away. Pointless. Surely this has been thought of.

I'm not seeing what extra benefit this brings to the race.

Perhaps the aim of it is to let a car overtake and pull away a bit so there is less overtaking ?

Or, if even with the DRS the guy behind doesn't make it, he can have another stab at it after the chicane?

Is this car racing or Scalextric bonding with an Airbus?

The idea is for the first DRS zone to allow the driver behind to get in the ideal position for an overtake in the second zone.

Not sure on it really, I guess in Australia and occasionally in China we did see quite a few cases of cars being just about within 1 sec to activate DRS, but weren't close enough to think about passing. If it's used on circuits where there's two straights with very clear overtaking opportunities in their own right then I think it could be a bit overkill, but on the trickier tracks to pass it might be a good way for the FIA to balance up the possibility of overtaking.

I think there should be a limit on the amount of times drs can be used in the race. It has made the racing much more exciting but overtaking has become easy and predictable, as a younger viewer I only started watch in 2004 and this is the best season of F1 I have seen.

Maybe only allow drs to be used every 5 laps or 20 times in a race, or have it allowed for 10 seconds a lap or something. atm its here comes blah blah, drs, overtake.

I've been trying to reserve judgement on DRS as it's still new but coming off the back of Turkey, where - IMO - it made overtaking too easy, don't think this is the right approach (even if it is, the timing could have been better: should've waited til after a pass-free Monaco wink)

I thought the stated aim was to get the following driver into a position to overtake, not to allow him to breeze by. Maybe allow the possibility of two zones if deemed necessary; can't believe F1 doesn't have the resources to run some simulations to assess effect of DRS.

Some people are so negative and miserable I have no idea how they garner the enthusiasm to get out of bed each morning!

I _love_ f1. I put off loads of things to watch it when it's on. I read every news article about it. I even had it on in the hospital when my daughter was being born. However, I don't like these fake-drs-enabled overtakes. I don't see what's entertaining about it.

Overtaking is FANTASTIC when it's done using driver skill, with a great battle.. just being in a car going 15kph faster because you have an aero advantage over the other guy isn't exactly a talent based thing, is it?

Similar sentiments Alt - they need to fine tune the DRS implementation to allow close battles once more. Last race was too easy, the rest IMO close to correct. F1 has a pretty unique challenge in that the aero defecit to any following car is so extreme - most other series have slipstream >> aero defecit, not the other way round.

I hope that if there are 2 zones, they have them short - keeps the following car close, and stops the "cruise by" effect.
