So, qualifying is out of the way and we know the grid for next Sundays 100th Indy 500. They did well to get it in as we had a monsoon soon after bump day got under way. Great effort by Alex Lloyd to pull a rabbit from the hat right at the end and fine performances from Jay Howard and Pippa Mann to get on the grid for the first time.

6 Brits are in the field - Dario Franchitti, Dan Wheldon, Justin Wilson, Jay Howard, Alex Lloyd and Pippa Mann.

So who's going to win?

ETA: Despite the name, bevause of various wars this is the 95th Indy 500, but the 100th year since the first one

It seems that the rules of qualifying at Indy mean it is the car not the driver that qualifies, so DNQer Ryan Hunter-Reay has bought out Bruno Junquiera's seat and will race in his stead. Most unorthodox.

Yeah that's happened before. Sucks for Bruno, unfortunately it's all about money and sponsorship $$.

Nothing special or contrived - he has just been damn fast all the way through & nobody could catch him in main qualy or the pole shoot out

What a night! Tornado's rolled across Indiana until the early hours and were over the city from late evening. Winds and rain like I've seldom witnessed, major destruction south of Indy. If John Mellencamp was home last night he didn't get much sleep! Good news is that it's set fair for Sunday, 86 and sunny is the latest forecast*.

• (Indiana weather forecasts are the only ones I've known to be less reliable than Michael Fish & co.)

i've never seen this race live, on tv or otherwise........do we know precise details of which channel it'll be on? pay per view maybe?

I've got Virgin large package - but don't pay extra for Sky Sports - as it's usually all football bks.

It's on one of the Sky Sports channels.

Not sure if they will be streaming it on the official Indy website but I suspect somewhere like justin.tv will be showing it.

You can't argue with her qualifying time though, and she did win an Indy Lights race last year and stuck it on pole a couple of times. Some good drivers failed to qualify for the race. Some drivers are suited to oval racing I guess.

Yep agree with you. But all those races in junior formula's and bugger all results! It does beggar the question!

Like Patrick - she is UTTER Hopeless on anything but and oval. Just turning left can make for good tv (and there are some fantastic talents in Nascar and Indy), but when it come to late braking, and hard driving on a road course the true skill of whether a drive is really any good always come out

Look at someone like Ed Carpenter. Stick him on a road course and he's rubbish, yet he's been very impressive on ovals. Recall a second place finish in one of his outings for Panther? No mean feat when you have Ganassi and Penske fielding six or so cars.

True - but if you can't cut it on a proper road course, you are not really a top level driver are you! Not saying Oval are not a serious challenge - they clearly are (pity they are in thos Dallara things though and not proper 900bhp+ Tubro Champ cars
