Working/Volunteering at Silverstone for the GP?

I posted this in the Lounge, but thought it might be better fitting in here.

Has anyone worked or Volunteered at the GP before? I worked at the Grand National this year doing Customer Care, I'd love to be able to do something similar but at Silverstone in July (I don't know if that's possible though).

When I applied for the Grand National it was through an organisation - I'd be keen to know who is responsible for taking on people at Silverstone?

Any info, past experiences etc would be great.

i worked for them a few yrs back.....everyone employed by silverstone works the months preceding (or permanently)

I think site security may be Showsec but not positive, but, unless you are SIA licensed you will have a bit of a problem going that route I think.

Write to the MSA. Silverstone employ stewards for carparks, security etc but MSA affiliated clubs supply crowd and gate marshalls. But it's pretty much invite-only, as you can imagine, there are no shortage of volunteers for the £5 a day MSA pay the marshalls ...but the campsite showers are hot, the view is second to none and the camaraderie is the icing on the cake.

try and find out some of the companies that do general catering or have various hospitality boxes around the place, usually you will find they are companies that do all the major sporting events - gp, wimbledon, british open etc. and they usually operate on a basis that you give them your details and then they let you know of events they are doing and you can just say yay or nay.

Are you looking to be paid?

Spectator marshalling will be £15 for the three days (Fri-Sun), with camping thrown in. You are almost certainly too late for this year. Ring the MSA and ask to speak to the right people.

Catering would be your best bet - I think it used to be run across the site by Sodexo but I'm not sure if they hold the current contract. I imagine if you rang one of the catering/hospitality type recruitment agencies in Northampton they will know. You may get paid but this won't give you access to marshals camping so you'd need to arrange someone to stay that allowed you to get in and out of the circuit early and late.

You'll also work your nuts off for fk all and see sod all of the actual race and likely see no one famous/ interesting.

Working in motorsport isn't all its cracked up to be, take this from someone that works at the circuits nearly every weekend during the season, I opted out of working the GP this year and am going to have the weekend at home watching it with a cold beer (or two).
